By Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet
Earth Meanders come from Earth's Newsdesk

Earth is so beautiful, so perfect in its intimate interconnectivity, as are humans in their ability to create and transcend, to pass down knowledge, love, and ecological habitat to our children. Yet we know – especially direct victims of childhood rape and ecocide – that Earth and her humanity are filled with a dark, narcissistic self-destructiveness as well.

Two of the very worst evils stalking the land are those who sexually abuse children, and those who wage ecocide upon ecosystems. In fact, they are two sides of the same coin. This is going to be a deeply revealing and challenging essay. If you don’t think freely with an open mind; and are, well, dumb and insensitive, you may not want to try.

Earth and childhood innocence are two of the most profoundly truthful things ever. Yet humanity’s increasingly predatory nature threatens both. The urge to penetrate and destroy the souls of old forests and young children are a grotesque perversion, illustrating the evil that exists – within depraved soulless modernity – cut off from community, nature, and knowledge of right-living.

One of the worst aspects of both childhood sexual and ecocidal abuse is the extent to which talking about these pervasive and perverse ills are taboo. There are other similarities. Both desecrate what is good, loving, truthful, and required for continued humane and natural life by dirty, ugly, vulgar, and deathly power. There is of course the penetration – the perverse, evil desire by some to place their drill in warm and wet crevasses to extract energy while destroying the energy source.

Logging primary forests is very similar to raping children both in moral terror and lasting horrific consequences – the difference is largely only one of scale. The rhythmic pounding of the chainsaw into ancient forests reminds me of being raped. The same impulses that lead us to unquestionably destroy 60 million year old ecosystems for lawn furniture are on display as children are treated like flotsam, indeed trafficked as a commodity, for momentary ejaculatory self-gratification.

I was terribly sexually abused as a child, and have only recently emerged – damaged but mostly recovered – from the acts, the cover-up, and the continued demands by perpetrators and their protectors for silence. Being sodomized and forced to participate in sex acts by an Uncle were horrific enough. But even more detrimental, hurtful, and damaging to my development as a fully actualized human-being was an entire childhood growing up in an environment where my father was routinely sexually abusing a sibling, and where sexual abuse was epidemic in the extended family.

Growing up in a home rife with sexual energy directed at children is devastating, the degree of which was only fully revealed to me as an adult. I look back and realize how these criminal acts – sexual abuse, titillating sexual contact, man boy sex, and a massive cover-up blaming the victims – change your whole way of viewing the world. I am now clear – during what was otherwise a decent upbringing – that I and others around me were dramatically and permanently impacted upon by the sexual crimes and cover-ups as family roles, boundaries, and sexual morals didn’t exist. Speaking openly on such matters helps me with my mostly completed yet always tenuous recovery.

I was also born onto a dying planet, where ecocidal and wide ranging human psychosis – destroying all that is natural, good, truthful and life-affirming – is hailed as advancement and development. The personal victimization I experienced occurs daily on a local, regional and global scale as ecosystems that provide for our water, air, food and culture are brutally pillaged – along with all their bounteous life – without regard to anything but the lust for profit. As a trained ecologist, I am privy to Earth’s historic rape in every tarnished ecosystem I see, as I bear witness to Gaia’s and our death.

Earth is routinely ripped open with over-eager, hammy hands, reaching between her legs for treasures that should remain buried. Old forests are not meant to be logged for toilet paper, nor are gas and oil to be ripped from deep within Gaia’s body to poison the air life breathes. Humanity’s long-time rape of the natural world is killing Earth and will result in all life’s final demise unless the ecocidal rapists are stopped – using all means necessary.

The next frontiers in civil rights and natural law are allowing nature, animals, and ecosystems to exist without threat of ecocide, and stopping the rape of our children. Some things need to end because they are objectively wrong and against continued truthful and sacred existence. Much of the abuse and harm we do to others is the result of abuse done to us, and everyone needs to break the cycle. Healthy children and ecosystems are needed simply for Earth and civilization – such as it is – to survive, much less continue to advance and thrive.

I am not looking for pity or making excuses, I just want it to stop – the silence, the lies, blaming and shunning victims, protecting of family reputations over justice for the abused, and the shame of childhood sexual abuse to be redirected to fall upon the abusers. The belief that I could not, must not tell – that I was voiceless as I remained a silent victim in both regards – was deeply engrained as I and others are groomed to be sexual playthings of the powerful adults we love on a dying Earth.

Those concerned with children and ecology – whether victims yourself or not – must turn the focus back upon the perpetrators, and stop being victims of crimes that were no fault of your own. The shame belongs squarely upon the perps, and this will only happen when we talk of the evils of penetrating children and ecosystems. Abusive destruction of childhood innocence and life-giving ecosystems must be stopped – again – using all means necessary.

I really have little patience or desire to hear from people the same banalities of "get over it", "forgive", "move on". Anyone who as a child had their trust ripped away as they were raped and sodomized by those that said they loved them knows the permanent damage it causes, and I will not be silenced. I hope forgiveness comes, but not until responsibility is taken by the guilty, and the continued victimization of power demanding silence ends.

It is not all right to rape and sexually arouse children, and I’m not going away, and holding my silence to protect the perpetrators any longer. I am not going away or stopping talking about the rape of Earth and children because it may make you feel uncomfortable talking about it.

About a year ago – after years of being rebuffed, put down, estranged from, and shamed by family members for asking what they knew about my abuse – I informed my small family that I would no longer remain silent about being raped and dealing with consequences of other family members around me being raped. Thus started a whole new round of abuse as close family members openly called me crazy and unstable for talking of such matters.

Regardless, I have healed and made my choice. I will no longer be the victim, living in quivering shamed silence, because my uncle forced me into group sex with an aunt when I was five. Or stop trying to understand my memories of being sodomized with objects by the same uncle, and fondled and sexually aroused by just about any relative that wanted to cop a feel. Or feel anger at the withdrawal of love and acceptance from shallow family members, only interested in covering their asses for their crimes and abuse.

I will speak honestly of what it meant to grow up in a household where sexual abuse was routine, about how it changed all the family dynamics, led to over-compensation to get attention, and caused me other lasting developmental harm that I still struggle to overcome. And I will continue to seek out information regarding who did this to others and me, who knew – and were and are protecting the perpetrators – and why upon coming forth, I am subjected to a whole new round of abusive victimization by my family.

One family member in particular – my brother-in-law – feels justified in routinely threatening me - with both violence and attacks upon my character - if I speak publicly about having been sexually abused as a child, how it ran rampant in my family, or refuse to keep family secrets. Apparently as an ongoing victim of childhood rape, I do not own my body, my history, or my voice. Anyone thinking I will be silenced on these matters is deeply misled. I will no longer be a victim of others less grounded in the Earth and connected to the humanity of its most small, weak and hope-filled people.

The message of this essay is to call upon each of us to protect what is sacred and good in the next generation and their ecological habitat. It is these sorts of abuse – that we expect others to bear, unsupported, in silence and shame – that cause so much of Earth’s ills. Childhood and ecocidal abuse must be spoken of until there is justice and resolution, until both are ended for a more loving, fair, and sustainable world.

Dear Earth friends,

There is nothing like Ecological Internet on Earth, for Earth. For two decades this lean, highly effective effort has pioneered the use of the Internet for ecological protection. Our half a million strong global network has facilitated hundreds of environmental victories through online protest, biocentric advocacy tools, and sharing of deep green thought. Together we are having the same or greater impact for Earth as much larger organizations, without the greenwash.

Today we launch our 13th annual mid-year fund-raiser to continue doing so. Together we must raise a minimum of $25,000 to pay for staffing, computers and bandwidth. Will you please donate $10, $35, $100 or what you can afford – right away – to get us started? http://climateark.org/shared/donate/

Ecological Internet has proven decisively that it is not the size of the environmental group that matters; it is size of the ecology vision and fight, and dedication to ecologically sufficient policy to sustain global ecology. Now is the time for you to support one of the Earth’s most important voices for biocentric policy – such as ending old forest logging, fossil fuels, and industrial growth - adequate to sustain Earth’s ecosystems.

Small – ecological science-based, people power environmental activism – is beautiful, and just more effective that the corporatist environmental movement.

Ecological Internet and I are honored to serve global ecology by speaking on Earth’s behalf. These efforts epitomize selfless service to sustain Earth's ecology, human family, and all life. I have built Ecological Internet through decades of extreme personal sacrifice, including taking on considerable debt, and I need your financial help to move forward.

Please support Ecological Internet at http://climateark.org/shared/donate/ as we fund-raise until the goal is met. And please understand that public broadcasting type appeals like this allow us to raise funds unencumbered by special interests and greenwash. In subsequent appeals we look forward to sharing our big plans moving forward, and to meeting and surpassing this modest financial goal together.

For Earth,
Dr. Glen Barry

P.S. Your tax-deductible gift of $50 or what you can afford will keep the loudest, most persistent voice for Earth – and policies needed to sustain global ecology – online and running at full speed. For the cost of less than one big NGO staff person, you will continue Ecological Internet’s speaking of ecological truth to power. You, Earth and I will be glad that you donate to sustain global ecology right now! http://climateark.org/shared/donate/

(Madison, WI) - Ecological Internet (EI) reiterates its declaration of a planetary ecological emergency [1], first issued two years ago. Since then abrupt climate change [search] has revealed itself in all its fury, habitat loss and extinction have intensified, food and water have become increasingly scarce, and human inequity and injustice have grown. Yet there have also been promising signs of a global awakening regarding global ecology, rights, and workers – seeds of revolutionary social change necessary to sustain global ecology.

“There is no question global ecological systems are collapsing, as important planetary ecological boundaries have been – and continue to be – crossed. The human system’s fantastical growth, based upon liquidating nature, has finally caught up with us, and key ecosystems necessary to sustain global ecology are failing,” explains Dr. Barry. “An Eco-Earth Revolution to overthrow the industrial economic growth machine destroying ecosystems may well be the only option left to sustain global ecology.”

This past week the world’s leading international Earth scientists issued their own similar warning – that we face a perfect storm of ecological and social problems driven by overpopulation, overconsumption and environmentally damaging technologies. In a paper prepared for the upcoming Rio+ 20 Earth Summit to be held in Rio de Janeiro in June, they also noted the failures of the economic “perpetual growth myth” and called for “dramatic action to avert a collapse of civilization” [2].

Ecological Internet’s first declaration was based upon scientific findings in “Planetary Boundaries: A Safe Operating Space for Humanity,” published in 2009 in the journal Ecology and Society [3]. Humanity was found to have already overstepped three of nine planetary boundaries – biodiversity loss, climate change and nitrogen cycle – and to be approaching boundaries for the use of fresh water and land, and ocean acidification. An overwhelming amount of other scientific knowledge supports these warnings.

Dr. Barry continues: “Ecological Internet calls for an immediate people’s power Earth Revolution on behalf of Earth, all life, and the human family. Revolutionary actions – composed of billions of acts of personal resistance to the industrial growth machine – are required to end coal and tar sands, dismantle industrial agriculture, and protect and restore old forests and other natural ecosystems. These are some of the requirements for living well within the biosphere’s carrying capacity.”

By Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet
Earth Meanders come from Earth's Newsdesk

The ecological foundation of being is unraveling before our very eyes. Without ecosystems there is no life. Fiercely loving Earth is the answer. Let's sustain global ecology together like our shared survival and abundance depends upon it. And while we set out using classic civil disobedience tactics, let’s not dismiss out of hand any obstruction, uncivil disobedience, sabotage and targeted insurgency tactics – that are non-terrorist – and that may be necessary to achieve global ecological sustainability. The human family’s shared survival depends upon passionately defending Earth using all means necessary.

Earth's ecosystems are collapsing under the burden of human growth, destroying our one shared biosphere that makes life possible. Industrial growth – frantically destroying ecosystems to feed insatiable, ever-growing appetites – is an aberration, a mistake, a disease. If left untreated, this will be the end of the human family, all life, and Earth's very being. Infinite economic growth at the expense of ecosystems is impossible, and seeking endless and inequitable growth in consumption and population can only lead to collapse and massive die-off.

Humanity’s last best chance to justly and equitably sustain a livable planet is to protect and restore ecosystems, end fossil fuels, and a people's power Earth revolution to utterly destroy the ecocidal industrial growth machine. We are all bloody fools to tolerate and not immediately overthrow a violently ecocidal system that is killing us all. If we all understood the implications of global ecosystem collapse, we would go now, together, and slay the global growth machine. It is too late to escape profound ecological decline, yet complete disastrous social and ecological collapse – and possible end to most or all life – may yet be avoided.

Sustaining ecology must become society’s central organizing principle or humans and all species face horrendous death. Globally it is time for radical change to simply survive converging ecology, food, war, water, inequity, population, climate, jobs, ocean, and extinction crises. It is deeply troubling most "environmentalists" deny the severity of ecosystem collapse, rejecting out of hand revolutionary measures sufficient to sustain ecology.

Earth is dying a death of a billion lashes as ecosystems are liquidated for consumption as if nature has no worth. 80% of old forests are gone, 50% of top soil, 90% of big ocean fish, bee populations are collapsing, we are undergoing abrupt climate change, and two billion are hungry and thirsty – to say nothing of acidic and dead oceans, nitrogen pollution, fracking and tar sands, extinction, desertification, water scarcity, pervasive toxics, and how all these ecological crises interact and reinforce each other.

Yes, you read this right – EARTH IS DYING – not that humans are going extinct, but Earth will recover. A whole body of global change and ecology science and intuition indicates Earth is well past its carrying capacity and planetary boundaries, that enough ecosystems have been lost, diminished, and changed forever, that the biogeochemical process that make life possible are failing. We face an unprecedented planetary ecological emergency.

Earth’s ecology crises go unaddressed because of lack of justice, equity and rights –and 1% elite rule with big NGO environmental group greenwash. Earth is dying NOW. The thin layer of life known as the biosphere is collapsing NOW. Life giving ecosystems are being destroyed NOW. Being is ending NOW. It could be different if we acted together to stop the forces of ecocide. The human family embraces a sustaining ecology ethic, or all die brutal, needless deaths, gasping for air, hungry and cold, at each other’s throats.

Most of us have lost contact with Earth that made and sustains us, so we kill our creator, life and ourselves without knowing or caring. It is everybody’s responsibility to stop this self-fulfilling death wish. Those who have yet to have this ecological revelation and are killing Earth must be compelled to stop, using all means necessary. There is no escaping the ECOLOGICAL FACT that global ecosystems and our one shared biosphere are literally falling apart as we continue to incautiously pull pieces from them.

Don’t Ever Say Never to Earth Revolution

True peace is not the absence of conflict as enslaved and hurdling towards mass ecocidal death. Peace is rights, equity, justice, jobs, sustainability – for which we sometimes must judiciously fight. It is ridiculous to suggest that these pernicious trends in ecological destruction – caused by industrial economic growth, which is nearly universally accepted and enriches the powerful 1% elite – will end without a full-scale people's power revolution – with all available tactics readied for if, and when, needed – by a small but enlightened and dedicated minority.

NO one seeks or desires violent revolution, yet Earth is dying, and we need to enter into revolution with all intentions of using civil and disobedient means, but if necessary we may need to cross the Rubicon and embrace uncivil and more confrontational means. Never before has such fundamental social change – challenging the deeply entrenched industrial growth paradigm, and the more is always better growth mentality, eating Earth’s ecosytems – been attempted.

A time may well come soon when it is necessary to use all means necessary against real eco-terrorists – those who are destroying with impunity our shared global ecosystems and our one biosphere, which make life possible and are necessary simply to survive.

All enlightened planetary life wants and deserves an Earth Revolution that is done wisely, escalates carefully, and is ultimately successful in bringing humanity and Earth’s ecosystems back into equilibrium. We of course want the right resistance, exerted by the right people, at the right time, calling for the right things. And as defenders of Earth and all life’s being – we find all violence repugnant, and do not seek any violence ever. But the stakes are high and we are not leaving any possibilities off the table, except for random terrorist targeting of innocents, which would not be tolerated.

Some people are simply taken aback – after several decades of being indoctrinated that civil disobedience is the only legitimate resistance to oppression and imminent death – and are unable to even hear and consider these academic thoughts. Yet, I do not recall ever reading words from Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi saying never, ever, ever will there be another instance where physical confrontation may be necessary or tolerable.

Both Gandhi and King provided a great service in making clear non-violent protest is always the preferable option, and that a great deal can be accomplished over time wielding this powerful tool. But they did not foreclose upon ever using traditional revolutionary activities in times of great danger, when it is thought there is not time, exclusively peaceful tactics have not worked, and when life’s very being is imminently threatened.

A faith-based movement – as was the basis for both King and Gandhi’s struggles – to bring people power to bear upon global ecology sustainability will not work as the primary motivator of the profound social change necessary to sustain ecology. Organized religion is simply too divisive, and bereft of knowable truth, to address what are fact-based, scientific ecological crises.

Organized religion is part and parcel of the history of ecological decline. It is vital to prospects for achieving just and equitable global ecological sustainability that all mythical gods be kept out of government, are made to tread lightly upon Earth, are kept off non-believers’ bodies, and remain within the realm of personal faith. Sustaining ecology must depend upon other more truthful and observable sensibilities such as global land, ecology, family, justice, equity, knowledge, and community ethics.

In fact, these two singular men – whose faith based movements brought about important social change – nonetheless have very little to say to inform the necessary dramatic changes needed now to achieve global ecological sustainability. The issues are different, the stakes higher, and the urgency greater. A single charismatic figure appealing to one religious tradition or another is not going to rise to bring Earth to ecological sustainability – our dependence upon destroying ecosystems to meet our desires is too deeply entrenched.

Earth Revolution has to come from the people globally. What is needed is a revolutionary Earth sentiment that arises organically from the people. Earth Revolution aiming to equitably and justly sustain global ecology would be well advised to first go through an escalating serious of protest tactics until a well-developed, and sufficient set of demands are met or rebuffed. If the latter, change of the magnitude necessary in a very short time may well come only from an empowered minority practicing leaderless resistance tactics based upon an underground cell structure.

People globally would participate in such an Earth insurgency to the degree and using tactics that are consistent with their conscience. It is common sense when you lose the ability to sustain yourself – through despotism, ecocide or injustice – that you have the right, indeed a duty, to defend ourselves. If enough people – perhaps 3% of the human family – all at once rushed and destroyed the sources of ecocidal power – Earth, humanity, and all life could be saved with very little if any violence.

Things would be difficult for the formerly rich (broadly defined as those living detached from nature in a comfortable but Earth destroying technological cocoon, including much of the global bourgeoisie) for some time – as they readjust to living within ecological limits. But they would adjust, and all could survive leading simpler, more grounded and meaningful lives, rather than face a final and brutally violent apocalyptic end under the status quo.

To refuse to even consider more robust revolutionary tactics – which for many have brought freedom, and ended monarchy, slavery and other ills – to protect all life's shared survival from global ecocide in the short time we have, is copping out on Earth and virtually assuring an end to being.

Non-Cooperation, Obstruction, Sabotage, Insurgency

The timing for Earth Revolution is so right: Earth is dying, people are suffering, species are going, freedom is failing, uber-inequity reigns, economic injustice is the norm, yet people are awakening. There has never been such high hope regarding the prospects of achieving global human and economic rights, equity and justice, and of the need to sustain ecology. And given the terrible state of global ecology, equity, justice, freedom, and rights – governments have in fact abdicated.

Only profound, revolutionary, gut-wrenching social, economic, political and personal change will save Earth, humanity and all life from ecology collapse and an end to being. Failure to accept revolutionary change tactics means we are accepting ecosystems and society will collapse, and you just want to enjoy living excessively awhile longer. Surely it is not rational to fail to pursue revolution because it may become violent, when violence orders of magnitude greater exists now daily under the status quo growth machine, and will only intensify as apocalyptic end of the world approaches.

We should pursue Earth Revolution using aggressive civil disobedience and non-violently as long as we can and they are effective. But the successes achieved have thus far been tiny compared to what is required to abet ecocidal trends. If accommodation and compromise continue to be rebuffed, and Earth is dying, and thus our very survival depends upon ecosystems which are being killed by ecocidal evil, we have an obligation to look at other well-known uncivil disobedience, non-cooperation, sabotage, and insurgency tactics – as well as emerging transnational protest opportunities presented by the Internet – to bring about social change for a living Earth.

Given the political and economic systems’ inherent and profound violence to people and nature – as well as urgent global justice, equity and ecological imperatives – strategies and tactics are going to have to continue to be evaluated and evolve. Violent or non-violent is not the main consideration, and rarely are they exclusive. Other aspects of radical social change tactics – such as effective or non-effective, civil or uncivil, timely or too late, accommodating or not – are just as important.

Leaderless resistance tactics used by current global revolutionary movements could morph into underground cells waging revolution for global freedom, rights and ecosystems. The necessary Earth Revolution to sustain global ecology could escalate to non-cooperation with the ecocidal system, agro-ecological gardening while obstructing industrial agriculture, protecting and restoring ecosystems, and love-making and sharing.

And maybe – and only if absolutely necessary – Earth Revolution could embrace wisely conceived and targeted sabotage and insurgency to utterly destroy the global growth machine that is devouring ecosystems and destroying being.

There are many soft targets in the under-belly of the industrial growth machine that is liquidating ecosystems for throw-away consumption. Poorly defended fossil fuel, old forest logging, communication, pipeline and other industrial infrastructure abound. We know the primary perpetrators of ecocide profiting from Earth destroying activities, and they could be made to pay a heavy price, dissuading others from doing so.

Throughout history there are instances where revolutionary violence has been a liberating force, and other times where it has been oppressive. The coming Earth Revolution need not be overly violent. Like most revolutions, there will almost certainly be some. Again, NOBODY SEEKS VIOLENCE, and revolutions which don’t emphasize violence, while acknowledging the rights of others to act within their conscience, and which do not try to use violence to control its members, can often be remarkably free of physical coercion. Other times, where vital social change cannot be delayed – yet is highly contested by privileged elite – this may not be possible.

Ongoing institutionalized violence by the elitist economic growth machine, military legions, resurgent fascism and corporate ecocide far exceed what has occurred historically during liberating people power revolutions (and much of this is often incidental and caused by fringe forces). The level of violence during any possible Earth Revolution would largely be determined by the responses of the oppressors to legitimate and enlightened opposition to end ecosystem destruction, injustice and inequity.

Nature and I Fight Back

As I have spent a lifetime studying global trends of ecological decline, it has become clear that current remedial actions are going to be orders-of-magnitude inadequate. The over-population, ecosystem loss, toxics, injustice and inequity are just too pernicious. And I have also long had a fascination with the topic of non-violence, and when violence may be justified and necessary. These life-long observations have led me to become a reluctant member of the revolutionary left.

I am well aware of what humans are capable of in terms of violence, and the damage it does. I grew up in a family rife with childhood sexual abuse – in which I was violently sexually abused by a "favorite" uncle. My own topsy-turfy relationship with my lovely wife – who I love so much we have been married twice – was nonetheless marred by emotional and physical abuse on both our parts. Paradoxically, I excelled as a private in the army, yet left seeking conscientious objector status.

After leaving the army, I was quite proud of my commitment to peace, as I am now. And some former acquaintances are undoubtedly put off by the cognitive dissonance of a peace activist embracing revolution. But now, unlike then, I can envision something for which I would be willing to fight – other than god or country, which I have long rejected as the basis for killing – and that is continued existence for all life. We are one human family utterly dependent upon Earth's ecology for shared being. And if we don’t fight the forces of ecocide win and everything dies.

Knowing this, I have followed big dreams with my life, with no guarantees, and very few fundamental regrets. Giving your life to Earth is deeply satisfying. Nonetheless, sometimes I feel so traumatized by what I know is being done to Earth, and what will be the consequences, that I can hardly carry on. I am comforted by the expectation that at some point – those that realize Earth is dying – will have to take matters into their own hands, and will succeed. Indeed, people are coming together now for ecology, workers and rights. Such a people power Earth uprising is the only way we survive together.

** As I always do when writing about Earth Revolution, let me be clear that I am a political ecologist writing of these matters academically. Anyone carrying out Earth Revolution would be solely responsible for their actions.

Today is my birthday and it’s going to be a good time. So as I craft a day of mirth, free spirit and all my favorite activities, let me ruminate upon what I wish for as gifts on this special day.

I want peace on Earth, real peace, the kind where the armies demobilize and don’t remain standing like it used to be. Peace where trillions aren’t wasted from funding public social needs. I want a real and permanent turning of tanks into ploughshares. War’s obscene waste of energy, materials, human potential and life cannot persist if human and ecological being are to continue. I want it to end now.

The truth is we are one human family, one species, perhaps from different lineages with a crazy uncle, but a family nonetheless. And I want us to start acting like it. Nation state boundaries are a new false construct meant to divide us. As a human family I want our basic universal rights strictly and unconditionally observed. The human condition is absolute freedom as long as we don’t hurt others. I want gods and governments off of and out of my body.

The lack of economic justice is atrocious and I want extremes in inequity ended now. With billions having unmet needs, I want to extend basic needs to all. I want sustainable livelihoods and much more equal wealth distribution as the norm. I want sharing to allow basic needs of all to be met, with extra for smart, hard-workers. I feel the pain of billions suffering as billions have their every need met, and the 1% feasts like kings of old. I want this grotesque unfairness of the human condition to end now.

Without global ecological sustainability we are dead. So I especially want humanity to power down to once again exist within the boundaries of ecosystems, their life, and the biosphere’s needs. It is time to show good will – and recognize the right to exist – for all life. The variety of life on this planet is amazing. Each has an equal stake upon its niche. Together all species are required to form ecosystems which make Earth habitable. I want ecocide to end now using all means necessary.

Mostly I want the inevitable unraveling of industrial society to occur in a reasonably just and minimally disruptive manner. I want the human animal to return to the land, water, air and oceans in a way that doesn’t destroy ecological being, and causes minimal suffering for all life. Earth is well beyond its carrying capacity already, meaning there are going to be large scale die-off in ecosystems, life and people. It has already commenced. I want the meek and unfortunate to inherit and reinvent the Earth post-collapse.

I want humanity to continue, so I want my family to learn to consume less and like it. We are going to have to commit to ecosystem protection and restoration; organic, permaculture, bioregional agriculture; fewer toys and more durable, well met needs; and things not being the meaning of life. I want plastic junk consumption ended now and organic, non-toxic and non-industrial meeting of our needs and reasonable desires.

When we all are fed, housed, free, actualized and productive; I want to play. I desperately want the human family’s energies put in creative expression – into arts, sport, thinking, love-making, literature, community, spiritually, philosophy, and the search for truth. For me this starts with my need for an Aaron Rodgers football jersey from the world champion and undefeated Green Bay Packers.

I want our thinkers, creators, peace-makers and visionaries celebrated like we do our celebrities and athletes. It is cool to be smart, to be you, to care, to sacrifice, to want more lasting well-being for your extended family. And I would like to be able to make a living and care for my family by working to get us there.

I want free thinking and pursuit of truth as the meaning of life. And want this and all the above now, whatever is required to get it done, because human and planetary lifes are too short to mess around. Let’s together get it done starting now.

Earth Meanders come from Earth's Newsdesk

Introduction

On the tenth anniversary of 9/11 attacks upon America, I too mourn 3,000 victims of a monstrous criminal evil. Yet as a politically unaffiliated free thinker and global citizen, I am acutely aware that this was only the beginning of the decade’s violent criminal atrocities. I will not and cannot forget America’s dramatic and incautious over-reaction, as mostly decent countrymen and women lashed out with a murderous vengeance. Some 250,000 to one million have been killed in Iraq and about 50,000 in Afghanistan by America’s illegal wars and military aggression (some estimates run much higher). Why bring this up today? Because those that write history control our future, and the true story of American war crimes has not been told.

Post-911, America’s political leaders with vast public support, turned loose its vengeful legions and killing machines, in effect murdering – as occurs with all war deaths – at least 100 to 350 times as many innocents in Persia and Arabia as were lost in the twin towers. The vast majority of these casualties are innocent civilians that loved their children, worked, and prayed to their god just like their New York brethren. Given that several hundred thousand to a million innocent Middle East civilians have been murdered in a decade of American cold-blooded revenge for 9/11, this essay will ask whether this is enough and the wars of murderous vengeance can end now.

Post-911 bad American behavior shows how easily patriotism becomes nationalism, to justify militarism, leading easily to fascism’s tyranny and mass killing. In addition to mass indiscriminate murder worthy of the 911 attack perpetrators, America’s post-911 responses include torture, prisoner abuse, stripping civil liberties, arbitrary indefinite detentions, spying on citizens, and the rise of a fascist police state. This loss of tangible freedoms in a war proclaimed to be about freedom leads me to question whether America can be said to be the good guys in any real sense in the war on terror, when it uses terror tactics itself.

The Earth Meanders series of essays – which place global contemporary issues within an ecological framework – prides itself with providing alternative narratives from a different biocentric, human family centered viewpoint. I am told free speech still exists in America (albeit in tawdry remnants that is spied upon). Yet with cable news mythologizing 911 victims and troops 24/7, I must speak my mind and be heard. I would find the likely assaults on free-thinking, alternative narratives like this one presented here to be funny, if it weren't fascist censorship by the thought police. America is free, has freedom of speech, this is why we fight I am told. You do remember?

This essay explores the fact that state sponsored murder by U.S. troops – acting upon illegal orders in multiple unjust and undeclared wars – has killed hundreds of thousands if not millions, including many, many innocents, whose families mourn their deaths too. It asks whether we Yankees have exacted enough revenge and gotten even yet for 9/11?

If so, can we end the wars and bring the troops home, while remaining eternally vigilant regarding terrorism? Can some of the war trillions be redirected to address our shared collapsing economy, ecology, society, justice, jobs, equity and fairness? Can we adopt a little of the spirit of other victims of terrorism – shown recently in Spain, Norway and elsewhere – and not become terrorists ourselves, forgive our transgressors, and stop hating and murdering now?

Perma-War, War Crimes and Fascism

America has become a vicious fascist empire, whose legions steal resources, destroy ecosystems, and murder to maintain inequity and over-consumption for corporations and the ruling elite back home. In taking revenge upon poor, hapless villagers eking out a living that had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11, while being guided by oil geo-politics, the United States has shown clearly that it is unexceptional, and that in fact it is dangerous, greedy, and ecocidal (killing ecology). Patriotism DOES NOT mean silence as perma-war fever overtakes and kills the very moral fiber of your once great nation.

9/11 was blow-back from a long history of U.S. occupation and militarism, period. It brought home to the U.S. nationalistic militarism, crashed economies, and tawdry morals it has inflicted upon the world for over a century – with notable exceptions like the World Wars. In other words, when you act like the schoolyard bully, stealing and acting better than everyone else, eventually someone tries to take you down. Osama may be dead, and we may continue to fight the tactic of terrorism forever, yet we have already lost the war to avenge 9/11 justly and honorably, and a whole lot more.

9/11 unleashed America's dogs of war, leading to at least half a dozen ongoing wars (the ones we know about). U.S. troops have in effect waged genocide upon Iraqi and Afghanistan civilians for almost ten years through a brutal counter-insurgency campaign, reigning bombs and radioactive ordinance at will. The U.S. now spends $600 Billion a year on war, nearly doubling in 10 years, which is spent for hundreds of military bases around the world, used to police and occupy much of the world; and for illegal secret programs that overthrow leaders, carry out assassinations and torture, and eliminate freedoms and democracy overseas and here at home.

Post 911 America became THE evil empire - narcissistic, entitled, superstitious, uneducated, ecocidal, militaristic, unequal, unjust, and unfair. I have written at length of Bush and Cheney’s war crimes, there is no doubt they occurred and have gone unpunished. Yet Obama – sold to us and elected as America’s great black hope – has left these policies virtually untouched, in many instances strengthened, like with the Afghan surge and military adventurism into Pakistan, intensifying illegal perma-war against international law and norms.

Thus Bush, Cheney, Obama, their staffs, lines of command, officers, troops and acquiescing U.S. citizens are all war criminals. Their crimes include carrying out asymmetric ongoing revenge killings far beyond the original horrendous crime – morphing not so subtlety into wars of occupation and destabilization for oil. Their unimaginative, non-nuanced and plainly illegal actions in prosecuting illegal wars of aggression have also resulted in the loss of hard fought advances in international law, human rights, and civil liberties. It is unlikely things will ever be normalized soon or perhaps ever – particularly as the conflicts likely true $3.7 trillion dollar price tag – $2.5 trillion already and more to come when all is accounted for – has devastated the once great nation’s economy, ecology, and society.

Much has been lost on the home front as questioning government militarism has been virtually outlawed by myth-making, virulent nationalist propaganda, and violent crowds. The door has been opened to dangerously right wing, fascist, bellicose and vicious, hard-talking politicians – each falling over themselves to be harder than the other on terrorism at the expense of preemptive killing and loss of liberties.

The Republicans and Tea Party (which has always been here as John Birch, McCarthyite fascists) are mostly superstitious, uneducated, bigoted fascists bent upon denying restraint upon military power, and observable scientific truths, in order to further enrich the ruling elite at the expense of workers, rights and ecology. Corporatists use the situation to dismantle hard fought and vital freedoms, regulations and protections, so society can be enslaved, resources over-consumed and ecology destroyed by the mega-rich in the name of "jobs", "patriotism", and stopping "gays".

Americans are indoctrinated that they are exceptional, god's chosen people. Yet when the killing in our name with our tax-dollars commenced, we were told to shop, not conserve – something we did in earnest until war expenditures crashed the economy (as has happened with virtually every empire). There is no such thing as perfect security, particularly in a vibrant liberal democracy, and trying means limiting freedoms, rights, and a permanent state of war. America’s 9/11 incautious militarization – at home and abroad – far exceeds the evil of one criminal act, however horrendous.

War Bad for Ecology

We have watched the war on terror morph into the war for oil and other resources, which we are stealing at the point of a gun from poor local inhabitants that live on the foreign land above our oil, and thus must be killed, removed or pacified. America’s industrial, speculative capitalism has been shown to be deeply violent - routinely killing people, species and ecosystems with impunity. Human life and ecology are worth nothing if they block the ruling elite from growing richer.

Without diminishing what was lost on this fateful day 10 years ago, let's gain some perspective. Coincidentally, bad sources of drinking water kill 3,000 kids DAILY, and it is totally preventable globally with one-time $20 billion dollar expenditure, a tiny percentage of our military budget. This means some eleven million deaths of innocent children have resulted from bad water in 10 years. Where is the outrage? Why is nothing being done?

These kids and their families aren't bankers- yet internationally the 2.5 billion living on less than $2/day, one billion without adequate water, and another billion with not enough food, have dreams and hopes too. They love their children, work hard, and feel pain too. They are also routinely wracked by the consequences of American militarism, and deserve to be heard and share in Earth’s bounty too. As deeply addicted Americans wail regarding gasoline prices, perhaps we could pay a bit more and share so these HUMANS that are our FAMILY can live a decent life too? Is that asking too much?

Anyone not deeply and profoundly outraged by the violence done daily by the U.S. military and ruling elite's economic growth machine - to the natural world and those living in abject poverty - is not fully human or actualized, has not overcome childhood indoctrination and superstition, and is no friend of truth, justice, equity, sustaining ecology and the human family.

Those who think we cannot afford to sustain ecology and share with the less fortunate, while running a war economy for decades, and only after everyone has a job and the economy is growing, do not understand how ecosystems work and our utter dependence upon ecology for EVERYTHING. They ensure a violent people’s power revolution to aggrieve terrible, vicious global inequity in living conditions.

American’s grotesquely wasteful and consumptive way of life – epitomized by foreign policy that takes resources at the point of a gun – is leading the world right to the brink of final ecosystem collapse. In fact, God’s chosen exceptional people are totally ignoring climate change caused extreme weather which is trashing America all year right in our faces.

America is so self-absorbed, so cocooned in air-conditioned comfort, so unexceptional, and so ecocidal that it wouldn't notice abrupt climate change if it bit it in the ass - or crashed the economy, led to foreign militaristic resource adventurism, and destroyed the Yankee spirit of decency. Gee, I guess we should pray for rain.

Virtually every other grave ecological threat to humanity including ecosystem collapse, abrupt climate change, water scarcity, dying oceans, food shortages, over-population, inequitable and over-consumption, etc. has been put on hold as we cower in our beds, pissing ourselves with fright that today a terrorist may kill us, rather than going about our daily lives with pride and courage.

If there is no ecology, there can be no economy, no jobs, nothing! The U.S. and world economy - which have been based upon unlimited growth, resource use, and ecosystem destruction - will never "recover" to what it has been. Such grotesquely high levels of growth in inequitable consumption simply cannot be sustained in an over-populated world with all having ever higher aspirations. The human family commits to voluntary simplicity and sharing, or we will all die at each others’ throats – in one or another perma-war – seeking ecosystems' last ill-gotten wealth.

The human family, plants and animals, and our shared Earth, are one, which some call Gaia, a living but dying organism. Our whole living Earth family is in ecosystem collapse together, and achieving global ecological sustainability must be where we focus our energy and resources, not warring over our religious differences and to further oil addiction. As America's gluttonous over-consumption comes to an end – largely as a result of poor governance post-911, ecosystem collapse, and the bills coming due for perma-war – American citizens must resist turning even more sullen, belligerent, self-righteous, thus showing clearly there is nothing exceptional here.

Truth and Reconciliation

The U.S. needs a truth and reconciliation commission investigation to fully and transparently investigate all U.S. war crimes after the attack, and to immediately commit to ending the post-911 wars. We need the true 911 history, not the Disneyfied glorification of unjust war, vengeance, and resource grabs by the corporate media, made holy because we are god’s chosen people.

Only bringing those responsible to justice for all post-911 atrocities – while continuing to build the body of international law, courts and international police to punish and eliminate unjustified terror (remembering justified wars of liberation do exist) – can end the killing. Then together we can begin ending much worse crimes like ecocide, elite corporate rule, and rising fascism which threaten the entire human family's freedom, livelihoods and very existence.

It is well past time for Earth's human family to rise-up and shut down U.S. perma-wars, wage people power Earth revolution against ecocidalists and their industrial growth machine, and get back to the land and gardens to protect and restore ecology. I believe strongly it is better to go on lively freely and humanely, engaged with bettering the world, while being careful – yet perhaps suffering an occasional terrorist attack – than to live fortified, isolated and morally repugnant lives of aggression and resource thievery.

Haven't we all paid enough for Osama’s lunacy? He’s dead and this can all end if the corporations and military/industrial complex benefiting richly will allow it. Can we please stop the post-911 repudiation of everything for which America has ever stood? Let’s use the peace dividend to transform the world.

I and Ecological Internet fearlessly think freely and speak truthfully regarding global ecology and the human family's condition. Join us on the globally ecologically sustainable, genuinely peaceful, people’s power, human rights filled, equitable and just side of history. Or we can allow continued fascist perma-war and ecocide, and wait for being to collapse into nothingness.

Ever since the human family embraced a growth based mentality and obsequious faith in liberal economics, we have witnessed a series of bubbles. The most recent boom-bust cycle has been the still unresolved financial and mortgage bubbles, but bubbles go as far back as the Dutch tulip mania of 1637. Exuberant yet clearly unsustainable growth, or inversely destruction, appears to be inherent to industrial, speculative, and growth obsessed capitalism. Bubbles represent the human proclivity for greed, to grow too fast, overshooting demand, while often exhausting key resources.

Global ecology, the biggest bubble of all, is now collapsing and will soon burst. Voracious economic and human growth have raged for three centuries upon the back of dismantling ecosystems globally. Humanity’s economic outputs have been over-valued relative to the ecologically mediated resources incautiously razed for their production. Earth’s carrying capacity - meaning ecology's finite ability to provide ecosystem services and absorb pollution – has been surpassed. Having grown beyond what Earth can bear, the human family is said to be in "overshoot", which can only lead to collapse.

Earth is a living being and like all life can die. Earth is dying now as virus-like humanity destroys its host's ecosystem organs. Every day we scrape Earth of its plants and animals, dig and drill into toxic “resources” not meant to be unearthed, and crap our wastes into air, land and water. Systems biology tells us an exponentially growing system in positive feedback – such as the super-sized economy feasting upon finite and precious global ecology – always eventually destroys itself. This is particularly so given perilous lag times of many ecosystem processes and losses.

The ecological systems underlying human existence are beginning to burst like bubbles. Virtually every type of ecosystem and their output – fish, food, water, air, climate, forests, land, wetlands, soil, etc – are now collapsing locally and regionally. We are witnessing this steady biological impoverishment, of virtually every life-giving ecosystem, aggregate to the whole biosphere – the thin mantle of life surrounding an otherwise lifeless Earth. When speaking of a biosphere bubble burst it is accurate to say Earth is dying. And that it need not be that way, if only we were able to change to maintain ecosystems that foster all human and life’s being.

Ecology has provided a constant stream of services to humanity and other life, making Earth habitable, for what seems like eternity. Food offers one illustrative example of humanity’s utter dependence upon ecology: sun, water, soil, climate, seeds and healthy agro-ecological systems are where food comes from - not grocery stores and mini-marts. That we need air, water, soil and other ecosystems are demonstrable truths – unlike beliefs in unknowable ancient messiahs, which have guided so much of Earth ecology’s destruction.

Industrial capitalism is dependent upon destroying ecosystems as resources for temporary increases in the well-being of some. While climate change is one of several global ecosystems that are collapsing due to human over-use, it is important to remember there are other collapsing ecological systems – including soil, water, forest, wetland, nitrogen, ocean, toxic, ecosystem, poverty, food and others - that singly and together threaten continued human and ecological being. It is these potentially cumulative impacts of several assaults upon key global ecosystems that are most problematic and potentially chaotic. And it’s not even done fairly, as 2.5 billion live on under $2 a day.

The industrial growth machine’s rampant misuse of inappropriate technology to rip apart Earth’s life-support systems for endless frivolous wants by some as others starve and eke out a living must yield to some basic truths. If we are to sustain the required ecosystem habitats necessary, we cannot cut and burn them simultaneously, or multiply to such numbers that we overwhelm them. If you’ve ever seen an over-grazed pasture you know what over-population does to a limited land and resource base – human population must be urgently and humanely reduced.

Hubristic faith in technological solutions to Earth being beyond its carrying capacity is fanatical madness. Continued technological reliance to “solve” Earth’s ecological carrying capacity problem will only inflate the bubble further and result in a bigger bursting, and less remnants from which to try to reconstitute an ecologically based future. Inane techno-optimism such as geo-engineering is ecocide right up to the end – pushing Earth to the wall, raping her, before killing her. It is far preferable to begin to adjust human demands upon ecology to reasonable limits. Not only is ecology truth, and you cannot eat money, but collapsing ecosystems are not substitutable with technology.

What to do? We need knowledge based solutions to sustaining global ecology that are also just, equitable and enhance human dignity - not superstitious, illogical, greedy, and ignorant responses of god's self-chosen ruling elites.

It is too late to stop the global ecology bubble from bursting. Yet a short window exists, perhaps, to lessen the impact of the ecology bubble burst, and provide for some manner of decent existence and potential for restoration and regeneration of a new human/nature project post-collapse. But if we continue to do nothing, or next to nothing, the cumulative impacts of global ecological collapse will intensify and prove to be unrecoverable, unless met with opposing force to end the ecocidal activities surpassing ecology's limits.

It is time for us to return to the land, air, water and oceans and fight for their and our protection and restoration. Simply we must embrace ecological restoration, ecosystem protection, industrial power down, escalating protest and a people’s power Earth Revolution. For continued shared survival the human family must protect and restore natural ecosystems as the keystone response to biodiversity, ecosystem, climate, food, water, poverty and rights crises. Few are doing so as rigorously as is necessary.

Both the perpetrators and greenwashers of ecosystem destruction must be confronted with a wave of people power protests for ecologically sufficient policies like ending primary forest logging, fossil fuels and industrial agriculture. Existing non-violent, direct action protest is fine and must be enlarged, though it has not yet, nor is it likely to be, scaled to an extent able to win on its own. We will need to further intensify our efforts to use the wide myriad of civil and uncivil disobedience tactics known that disrupt ecocide. And if these appeals are not responded to affirmatively after 40 years of stonewalling, we may need to escalate tactics to sabotage, carefully targeted insurgency, and as a last resort, guerrilla warfare.

We face a planetary ecological emergency. Misery and premature death from ecological collapse is all our fates unless we together and all at once resist ecocide. If we all rush and dismantle a coal mine or old forest logging operation, and when asked who did, we respond we all did, we will have won. To speak of sustaining ecology while pursuing anything less than the destruction and overthrow of the industrial growth machine is greenwash and subject itself to being destroyed. The only hope for surviving and regenerating from ecology’s burst bubble is to stop destroying ecosystems and change how we live – including more sustainability, equity and justice.

Maybe people aren’t ready for what I have to say, but I am going to keep saying it because it is ecology truth vital for shared human and all life’s survival. At times it is hard to be heard because I and my organization Ecological Internet refuse to sugar coat our message as we take on difficult issues with ecological science based diagnoses and recommendations. In a world of so much hurt, pain and illness; it is outrageous to futilely cling to an industrial consumer way of living that destroys ecology, people and all that is good and necessary to simply live. Do not wait for others to heal yourself or your relationship with Earth. You have to start now and work harder at both, doing what your conscience tells you is necessary, and taking full responsibility for doing so.
Re-Declaration of Planetary Ecological Emergency by Ecological Internet

A year ago today Ecological Internet (EI) during Earth Day 2010 declared a planetary ecological emergency. After the past year’s Gulf oil spill, multiple nuclear meltdowns and unaddressed abrupt climate change escalates; it is eminently evident that Earth’s ecosystems are crashing. On Earth Day 2011, EI reiterates call for an immediate and escalating people’s power Earth Revolution on behalf of Earth, all her life, and the human family. And for the entire human family to find a way – each and every – to get out and plant organic Earth victory gardens, and protect and restore ecosystems.

Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet’s President, says “The human family faces the imminent collapse of the biosphere – the thin layer of life organized into ecosystems, upon an otherwise lifeless planet – that makes Earth habitable. As noted a year ago today, human pressures on Earth System’s life-support systems continue at such a dramatic scale that they are causing global ecosystems to collapse. Escalating people power revolutionary action may be the only adequate measures that exist to stop abrupt global ecological collapse. Already we are seeing fascist political responses to scarcity, lack ecosystems, freedom and economic disparities. We are about to witness major famine events as well home agro-ecology strides are a must.”

An overwhelming body of ecological science indicates Earth System is past the tipping point and key global ecosystems and life-support systems are failing [1]. Marshes and rivers and forests and fish are far more than resources – they and all natural ecosystems provide for humanity’s habitat and existence upon Earth. A few centuries of unprecedented explosion in human numbers and surging inequitable consumption are needlessly destroying ecological conditions and habitat for a decently habitable living for all humans and species. Environmental movement accommodation and compromise have not brought required policies necessary to avert widespread ecosystem collapse, or to lay the basis for achieving global ecological sustainability.

Revolutionary actions such as ending coal use, reforming industrial agriculture, and protecting and restoring old forests and other natural ecosystems, stopping fracking and nuclear; are a requirement for living within the biosphere and life-support systems’ carrying capacities. There exist ways to live well within Earth's carrying capacity as we equitably and justly further human advancement with all Earth's plants and creatures at our side. Solutions exist: powering down, ecosystem protection, ecological restoration, reducing population, ending old forest logging and coal, and working for global equity, justice and peace. Earth and humanity’s survival depend upon getting these items implemented quickly using protest, massive and aggressive civil (and then uncivil) disobedience; keeping all options for further escalation open.

Dr. Glen Barry, also an independent political ecologist, will be releasing his “New Earth Rising” book this summer that academically considers an escalating Global People’s Earth Revolution. There is chatter already going at http://www.facebook.com/NewEarthRising and http://www.twitter.com/2NewEarthRising. “I think the book is potentially ground-breaking and lays out a people’s power vision for global ecological sustainability. The book is particularly pertinent at this time given global uprisings for freedom, workers and ecology.”

“New Earth Rising”, the book, presents the ecocidal condition of planet Earth, notes emerging fascist responses, reviews greenwashing responses, lays out a new global ecology policy measures, presents what is known about people’s power revolutions from history, and suggests how these past lessons and the Internet can be harnessed to sustain global ecology.”

### ENDS ###

[1] In “Planetary Boundaries: A Safe Operating Space for Humanity,” published in 2010 in the journal Ecology and Society, and presented also in Scientific American magazine’s April 2010 issue, twenty-eight luminaries from environmental and earth-systems science identified nine "planetary life-support systems" that are vital for human survival. It was found humanity had already overstepped three of nine planetary boundaries –biodiversity loss, climate change and nitrogen cycle – and is approaching boundaries for the use of fresh water and land, and ocean acidification.

Global people's power rebellions sweeping Middle East and American states are our last best chance for shared abundance on a finite Earth. We are one human family with natural human rights to freedom, worker rights, ecological sustainability, equity, knowledge, truth and justice. This essay calls for continued protest, more civil disobedience and a general strike if necessary to achieve these ideals in Madison and the world.

In the late winter/very early spring of Cheesehead discontent, the Cheddar Rebellion in Wisconsin is resisting a corporate take-over of the state by the neo-Fascist wing of the GOP teabagger nuthouse. The new tyrannical Governor – Scott Walker – is bent upon stripping teachers and other public workers of their collective bargaining rights; pushing through massive tax breaks for corporations and the rich at the expense of education, unions, workers and the poor; and deregulating environmental protections while selling the state to corporate interests. I don't believe in Scott Walker's god or family values yet he sure as hell is ramming them down my/our throats. He and his ilk continually vilify teachers, firefighters and cops as slobs and thugs.

Darth Walker’s power grab manipulates a manageable budget shortfall as an excuse to take away state employees’ collective bargaining rights and imposing an authoritarian worldview upon Wisconsin. Collective bargaining is the established human right of workers to freely associate with others, to organize and negotiate, to sell their labor. People own their bodies, their hands, their minds and their work; and they have a RIGHT to collectively organize for their interests and for maximal benefits. It is only due to the grace of 14 fabulous state Senate Democrats having gone into exile, and hundreds of thousands of protest participants, that Wisconsin remains free for now.

AMERICAN FASCISM

Scott Walker’s government represents the full blossoming of the tea party into American fascism. The conservative ruling elite botched 911, wars, climate change and the economy; now they want to break the middle and lower classes, destroy ecology for more inequitable consumption, and gut freedoms to hide and pay for their failures. The protests have exposed close ties between Scott Walker and David and Charles Koch, the billionaire brothers who helped bankroll the Tea Party movement. The Kochs wrote a million-dollar check to the Republican Governors Association; and Koch Industries, through its PAC, donated $43,000 to Mr. Walker's campaign, his second largest donor.

I absolutely never thought I would live to see fascism in Wisconsin – my homeland – or a more elegant, spontaneous, civil and uniquely Wisconsin citizens’ response. For going on four weeks, up to 125,000 Wisconsin citizens have daily occupied and protested at their capitol for workers rights, against regressive budget cuts, and to resist fascist tyranny. These entirely peaceful, respectful and even polite protests have been met with widening restrictions upon civil liberties including freedom of speech and assembly. If the tea party had protests of this magnitude, they would have dissolved into violence weeks ago. The Cheddar Rebellion has thus far been, and shows every indication of remaining, a textbook example of peaceful people power protest.

Yet, under Dictator Walker, Wisconsin’s previously open and accessible capitol – the “people’s house” – is now barricaded with intense searches just to enter and spontaneous protests are no longer welcome. For over a week Walker has been in contempt of court for failing to fully open the capitol, and most recently for not returning it to the pre-protest access policies. In contrast, protestors recently ended their continuous 18 day occupation of the capitol– with hundreds sleeping overnight on the cold marble – based upon the same court order.

With our NGO Ecological Internet (EI) and me being based in Wisconsin, I have some personal insights into the situation. I knew Scott Walker well in college as a friendly adversary. He lied, was dumb and was not liked then too, losing the University student body’s Presidential election to a write-in candidate, cheated and lied, and never graduated. He was as plastic, superstitious, dangerous and self-absorbed then as he is now. Walker is a demagogue, who played upon the worst in people to get elected Governor. Wisconsin is more openly racist, intolerant, unfair, repressive and potentially explosive than ever before thanks to the Koch/teabagger/Walker fascist corporate take-over.

America and the world know more about what is going on in Libya than in Madison. I have traveled some distance down-state to Madison three times in recent weeks to protest; and it is the smartest, most polite crowd of people I have ever seen. Police largely support the protestors and there has been minimal conflict. This revolution is being tweeted, but not televised, as it is clear the corporate media could give a damn about massive protests in America for social justice. Fox “News” even went as far as broadcasting footage of violent protestors with palm trees in the background, clearly impossible in a Wisconsin winter.

IT'S THE INEQUITY DURING TIMES OF GLOBAL ECOSYSTEM COLLAPSE STUPID!

Across the board humanity is at risk of losing the fruits of hard fought battles for human advancement. Over the past 300 years progressive and liberal thought and action have largely ended monarchy, slavery, and achieved equality, human rights and voting rights for much of the world. We have gained knowledge regarding ecology and our place in the world’s web of life, and fully understand Earth and humanity are threatened by global ecosystem collapse. Globally we are all witnessing political and social implications of collapsing ecosystems, resource scarcity and economic inequities.

In the United States some 400 individuals possess more wealth than the 155 million Americans in the bottom half. Globally 2.5 billion people live on less than $2 day; 800 million do not have enough food, and the same number lack clean water. The challenge of our generation is to stop Earth’s biosphere from collapsing, making our home uninhabitable; while maximizing human freedom, fairness and dignity. It is pure evil that so few have so much, while so many suffer daily, failing to meet basic needs.

A NEW GLOBAL DREAM

The American dream is a myth built upon once-off economic growth destroying global ecosystems and unfairly sharing the ill-gotten proceeds. A new global dream is emerging from world protests. We are one human family with natural human rights to freedom, workers rights, ecological sustainability, equity, knowledge and justice. Humans have a right to associate with whomever they wish, and a right to cooperate in negotiations. We all also have the duty to protect our habitat, and to protect and restore shared ecology at all costs. And like all peoples, we have the right to change our government when it becomes abusive.

Governor Walker has lost the people's respect and is unfit to lead. Darth Walkers’s illegal power grabs must be resisted fully now or we can look forward to a more unfair, poor, illiterate, stupid and superstitious America. Everyone has compromised but Scott Walker. What part of "court order" does this dolt not understand? The villain must drop the regressive budget and elimination of collective bargaining, and he must fully open the capitol to its people NOW! Failure to do so means he must resign, be recalled or impeached, and/or imprisoned. EI calls upon on all Cheeseheads to continue shunning Scott Walker and to further resist his fascist government.

Global people’s power protest sweeping the globe is humanity’s last best chance for survival during a planetary ecological and social emergency. And what has occurred already is truly global, as witnessed by people from Egypt ordering pizzas for Wisconsin protestors to show solidarity! Thank Gaia free speech remains alive and well, for now, in America and Wisconsin. NOTHING will be gained for workers, the United States or the world if we place limits upon our freedom and rights. Let's start valuing brain power too. It is cool to be smart, and to have been taught by Wisconsin teachers to sift and winnow to find the truth on fundamental matters of such importance.

EI’s global network and ecologists stands with workers in Wisconsin. We call upon all Wisconsinites and concerned affinity protestors to descend on the capitol and defend their rights. And that all peoples living under tyranny, or not having basic rights or needs met, rise up now – coming next to Saudi Arabia and China. Both Ecological Internet and our New Earth Rising project will honor and support Wisconsin labor’s calls for a General Strike if or when they are made. And we are willing to participate in active civil disobedience to stop the fascist budget and rollback of rights, and are committed to not letting the protests become violent, playing into the fascists’ desire.

We hope this commitment to a New Earth Rising is shared by the World, that people’s rebellions spread like wildfire nationally and globally, and that the whole human family participates and benefits. There is one positive thing that has arisen from all this mess. As noted on the #wiunion twitter feed, many of us have fallen more deeply in love with Wisconsin than we ever thought possible. There will be no backing down or the ruling elite and corporate fascists win. As Nelson Mandela noted, "It always seems impossible until it's done." On Wisconsin.

The Earth’s life is some 3.5 billion years old. In a mere 300 years human super-predators have taken it upon themselves to cut and burn other life forms to make a more comfortable life. Most are blissfully unaware that they are destroying their habitat. Remedial actions are orders of magnitude inadequate, band-aids instead of open heart surgery. We will quickly halt this growing industrialization, commit to ecosystem protection and restoration, and return to the forest garden, or we will all die. Really, if we continue as we are, the biosphere and ecosystems collapse taking being with it. And it will be grisly.

I haven’t written a really good rip-snorting Earth Meanders in awhile; though this is largely what I am known for doing. I use to meander quite frequently, writing personal essays in the tradition of Montesquieu looking at ecological sustainability in relation to other social issues, showing it is all related with ecology as the unifier. Nor have I literally ruminated regarding my life and ecology like I use to, spilling my guts regarding my turmoil and depression resulting from an acute ecological and historical awareness of global ecological change. This is overdue; particularly as I recently turned 45, I am celebrating this month 20 years of using IT and the Internet for ecological conservation, and thus some personal reflection is due. Stop reading if you don’t want to be shocked by these personal meanderings…

For those just catching up and not aware of Ecological Internet and my work much yet, let me tell you my story briefly, and why I care so much for Earth, all her creatures and the human family. I write Earth Meanders mostly for my own enjoyment and to express my thoughts, and my primary and overwhelming concern is that I write what I meant to say. If so, I like it, and could really care less what others think. So just when you thought I had matured, here goes another meander, which together with the others pretty much assure I can never run for office ;-) Potential employers please consider this piece an essay demonstrating critical thinking. If deep ecology – and free thinking and writing - are declared terrorism, I may be in trouble. Yet we all know there are no thought crimes, right?

Earth Dying

Humanity’s fate is completely one with the natural world. Our genes and cells – like all other species’ – are part of the larger environment and ultimately the global ecological system – Earth System or Gaia, if you will. Earth is alive and her air, water, land and ocean ecosystems self-regulate this organism like our organs do for us. The human boom of clearing natural ecosystems for “development” – which has only been occurring for a few hundred years, an ecological blink of an eye – is destroying our shared ecosystem home. Unless humanity transitions to a social, political and economic state devoted to global ecological sustainability; our future is apocalyptic ecosystem collapse as Earth becomes uninhabitable.

The Earth system is being destroyed by industrial capitalism’s emphasis upon growth as the measurement of well-being. As always poor people are being given the shaft by the rich. Ecosystems are treated like candies to be gobbled. And the environment is stopping working. As ecosystems collapse, we are reaching or passing the point where carrying capacities (ability to support life) and their lag times are exceeded, and the ecological fabric of being frays to the point where the whole biosphere dies.

Perhaps some bacteria on the ocean floor continue living, and cockroaches and dandelions, but Gaia - an entirely revolutionary, complex, amazing ecological amalgam of naturally evolved life, and their patterns and processes – is gone forever never to return. Maybe there are other Gaias, or this one can repair herself after we leave, but that is inconsequential; because as of now we only know of the one biosphere we share, it is remarkable, and we and all known life are utterly dependent.

Anyone with an iota of ecological knowledge and/or common sense can see the way we are treating Earth and her water, oceans, forests, climate and our shared biosphere is needlessly killing us all. Do some reading! Just consider with an open mind: 80% of natural primary forests gone, nearly all fisheries and most large ocean fish over-fished, abrupt climate change, water scarcity, militaristic resource grabs, surging population and over-consumption (albeit inequitable).

Some know Earth in crises and still don’t care. You are sick if you are not blown away by not yet over-developed world living conditions, the inequity, the stench, the unfairness of trade in resources to import goods, ripping off locals for trees and gold, and dumping wastes. The rich world’s beautifully coiffed yet still smelly rich elite are more concerned with maintaining enormously consumptive lifestyles that don’t give a rat’s ass about anything else. We live in times of great social inequity and injustice, and the movement for global ecological sustainability must remedy these as well, if only to ensure our own success.

Humanity Fucked if We Don’t Ecologically Transform Ourselves

EI and ecological science's grim prophesy of global ecological collapse is not without hope if we can transform our relationships with each other and Earth - but it must happen now, immediately, and with force. We must first protect all natural remaining ecosystems – back to the land and taking to the woods and protecting and restoring natural ecosystems! Then onto ecological restoration as power still exists in seeds to recover Earth. Just enough intact core land, ocean and water ecosystems and remnants exist to reconstitute biosphere losses with ecological restoration. We can embrace energy use reduction as our mantra, and choose a steady state economy that favors all living well forever over a few plundering, causing suffering and death for all.

Together we absolutely must act now to avoid global ecology collapsing - protecting and restoring natural ecosystems. We must all grow the ecological sustainability movement, organize including leaderless protest cells, and choose our own resistance tactics for which you are solely responsible. And we must overcome the grave disserve done to global ecology by corporate NGO greenwash of ecosystem diminishing extractive industries and techno-optimists considering geoengineering rather than human beings returning to living within nature.

The same bunch of Neanderthal cretins leading the fouling of the Earth, and who have stopped action for decades, are resurgent and remain in power and are pushing this greenwash crap that doesn’t really do anything for ecology. But then again, it is not as if government under U.S. democrats, or for that matter a liberal democracy anywhere in the world, were making huge strides on climate and ecology. It is time for us all to join Earth’s team again and grow food, restore ecosystems, and be one with Gaia as you homestead with your eco-village family. I contend this is the only remaining road to global ecological sustainability and personal family/friend group survival. We can do it together.

It is well past time to go around governments and use people’s power revolutionary tactics to achieve ecological sustainability. A soft revolution that makes clear there are certain activities that are no longer ecologically tolerable, and using all means with which you personally are comfortable to resist coal, old forest logging, tar sands, population growth, industrial agriculture, fish trawling, geoengineering, fracking etc. is needed immediately. I do not recommend harder revolutionary tactics at this time because well intentioned symbolic protest would be quashed. But we must prepare.

If humanity dares to discuss geoengineering – the apex of human hubris to think we can engineer creation – we are certainly free to discuss insurgency and change of political structures and social norms for Earth. Radicalness in thought and action is the way forward on global ecological sustainability as decades of compromise and accommodation have clearly failed to bring about the magnitude of ecological change necessary in the time we have. Humanity needs new ecology based ways of living.

And we just need some plain talking on what is at stake here. If you are too fucking stupid to see ecology is dying then you deserve to die too. My personal inner-most thoughts are the same - if you don’t care or obstruct the ecological revolution – you are ecocide. You can abuse your body, party, study, dream or do sports as you wish; but don’t destroy our shared ecology. Do what you like including aping incredulous superstitions you believe and that does not harm others, but it is not ok for you to take those living green lives and the entire biosphere down with you by destroying ecosystems with your over-consumption.

When you have a case like this, with one side knowledgeable and the other ignorant regarding a global planetary emergency, it is up the knowledgeable to destroy ignorance. There are so many other aspects of course. We need a planning horizon past tomorrow. There will be horrendous human and animal suffering because of the choices we make now. Will every last ecosystem be lost to get to the last resources? Shame on the U.S. for building, and then trying to hold onto, a lifestyle that is dangerous and destructive. It is time to for us all to downsize, and for others to reach a minimum standard of acceptable living. And I know it’s hard, as I grapple myself with simplifying and desiring objects.

Dr. Glen Barry and Ecological Internet

Unlikely a long haired neo-hippie intellectual like myself will be listened to outside of certain circles. I am generally not liked. Most of my family and close friends have abandoned and ostracized me, thinking I am crazy. I have been intense, driven and vain – but much less so as have aged and gained some perspective. They are partially right as I suffer from debilitating depression as witness end of being and Earth. But we do what we can, this is about the message not the messenger, and I feel much better thank you; aside from that niggling ecological fact that Earth and being are dying needlessly assaulted by known assailants.

Imperfect as I may be, I would be willing to take up arms to defend Earth, but there are so few of us with deep ecological understanding, and as of now we would be slaughtered. But I do academically write on how well known revolutionary strategies such as leaderless resistance and an autonomous cell structure are probably the only remaining way to organize ecological protest adequate to save being. Ruling elite and capitalists are not going to give up their Earth destroying ways unless made to do so. There is a body of people’s power revolutions of the past that inform the current situation, albeit still changing with the advent of transnational Internet advocacy networks and such.

Ecological Internet is well-established, has been around in one form or another including as Forests.org for 20 yrs. - along the way inventing blogging and getting a PhD with this work as the project. If you have just found out about us now, we were one of the first 10,000 web sites in 1993 and have just been under your and many's radar, consistently putting out successful biocentric ecological advocacy. I will be writing a memoir following completion of New Earth Rising – coming soon. But let me say at 5’6” when dripping wet, as with most things, small is beautiful. Pick a special ecological place and organize its protection and expansion.

I am the Founder, President and Chief Information officer of “Ecological Internet”, the web's leading provider of forest conservation and environmental portals and search engines, including the Forest Conservation Portal at http://forests.org/ and Climate Ark Climate Change Portal at http://www.climateark.org/. Ecological Internet (EI) specializes in the construction of environmental portals with unique information retrieval tools and original analysis. EI's web sites are widely recognized as premier environmental news, information and analysis web sites, and enjoy wide use from around the world.

This is the 20th anniversary of my work using the Internet to carry out Internet education on forest conservation, ecology, eco-forestry and sustainability and to build a community of forest conservationists. I have virtually pioneered the use of the Internet for forest conservation, inventing blogging and ecological search engines along the way, and building a huge variety of data sets, maps, queries and displays, and business practices for identification of high-priority areas for protection and restoration.

Ecological Internet (EI) – originally Forests.org – was founded with a grant from the MacArthur Foundation in 1999. But the work actually began in December of 1990 as I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Papua New Guinea. There on a 1200 baud modem I watched the characters go by one at a time, putting out rainforest protection information. Later this became my Master’s Degree in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development project, and my PhD in Land Resources. Since graduating in 2003 with a PhD, I have worked full-time with Ecological Internet.

I have conceived, established and continue to run all aspects of the servers, operating systems, databases and programming for EI. I am the webmaster, network and content manager. This involves managing a dozen large, complex and joined networked databases of forest conservation and ecological sustainability data, program information retrieval and integration tools, and multi-channeled distribution networks using social media, the web and email. Daily we carry out activities like commenting upon, networking and archiving biocentric news; and much thought and efforts goes into the analysis for alerts, press releases and essays such as this one.

This work has made me internationally recognized as leader in the use of the Internet for communication that facilitates forest conservation outcomes – possessing outstanding knowledge of sustainable development and environmental conservation science and global policy, and expert IT skills – and has been supported and recognized as such by the MacArthur Foundation and Google Grants.

I hope very much to continue with this biocentric ecological awareness and action work forever until my time to rest comes, though lately I have out of necessity taken to applying and interviewing for a job to subsidize the work. For now I and my wife – EI’s two key employees – are well established and happy on our 7 acre homestead and office for Ecological Internet – loving the tree planting and ecological restoration, and organic and permaculture gardens, even as we program Earth fighting tools on the Internet. We’ll see what happens.

I and many others love Earth enough to fight and die for being if necessary. Of course hopefully it doesn’t come to that. But when shared survival is threatened; if it must, it must. I have just completed my political ecology book first draft entitled “New Earth Rising” regarding possible revolutionary approaches to reaching global ecological sustainability. During the last few years many meanders have shared ideas on revolutionary ecological thought, as I researched the topic for my book, but I am an academic and not a practicing revolutionary, and I do write about other things. And I do look forward to writing more on other topics including homesteading, permaculture and gardening, and doing other things like playing music, hiking and reading/thinking.

Yet frankly mine is a gloomy prophecy. I see no need to apologize; this is what I have concluded in a lifetime of study on global ecological change. Humanity is plunging into darkness with ecologically unsustainable lifestyles, aspirations and procreation that are killing the ecosystems required for life. There will be a hard turn now back to ecology or being ends. And America and clones – land of the free but gluttonous – are leading the way. Please plan on buying my book when published sometime this year on these topics. Happy holidays, let’s together make 2011 a key year in the history of global ecological and social sustainability, and last minute donations to raise the last $5K in donations necessary to fund Ecological Internet are deeply appreciated at http://www.ecoearth.info/shared/donate/ .

EI PRESS/SOCIAL MEDIA RELEASE
Wisconsin Graduate and Green Area Resident Dr. Glen Barry Honored to be Named “Utne Reader Visionary” for Political Ecology Work on Internet

- The respected publication “Utne Reader” rightly terms Dr. Barry an “Eco-Rabble Rouser” as list as one of “25 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World”

January 15, 2011
From Earth's Newsdesk, project of Ecological Internet (EI)
http://www.ecoearth.info/newsdesk/

(Denmark, WI) – The “Utne Reader” has selected noted ecological commentator and activist Dr. Glen Barry as one of 25 leading visionaries in their November-December 2010 issue. [1] In the blurb accompanying the listing, it terms Dr. Barry an “Eco-Rabble Rouser” who was selected as an “Utne Reader visionary” because as “[a]n early political blogger, Barry has built a massive network for ecological change. His ‘global grassroots advocacy’ adds muscle to local environmental fights all over the planet, and when mainstream green groups fall short, he speaks up.” [2]

Ecological Internet (EI), which Dr. Barry heads and runs, has just learned of the honor and is only now providing comment. “I am gratified and humbled to have my life’s work on behalf of ecology be noted by such a respected journal as the Utne Reader. I believe strongly that global ecosystems are collapsing, threatening ecological sustainability of all life. It is time that biocentric ecological thought be given more media coverage in its own right, and hopefully this will help do so,” says Dr. Barry responding to the award.

Dr. Barry is an ecological sustainability activist, writer and technologist based in rural Wisconsin – yet practicing “grassroots global ecology activism” via the Internet from an old log cabin surrounded by gardens and forest restoration. [3] He is a 1984 graduate of Denmark High School, Wisconsin; graduated from Marquette University with a “Political Science” BA, and has a Masters degree in “Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development” and a PhD in “Land Resources” from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

“I am very pleased to be raised, educated, living and working in Wisconsin, which with deep connections to Aldo Leopold, John Muir and others, provide a huge school of ecological thought that has consistently pioneered our understanding of how to live with the natural world. Wisconsin has a deep responsibility to protect and restore its own forests, water climate and land or face continued ecological and economic decline. The movement for global ecological sustainability here in Wisconsin and globally is growing and becoming more formidable.”

Gaia – the Earth System [search] – is alive and like any living entity has rights. Earth has a right to not be stripped of its vegetative skin, its flesh mined, body punctured by wells, ecosystems liquidated; and precious water, air and oceans tainted. Gaia has the right to peacefully exist and to be free of harm, violence or ecocide (to be murdered). Air, water, land and ocean ecosystems are Gaia’s self-regulating internal ecosystem organs. All Gaia’s creatures possess an equal claim upon a fair share of her bounty for continued existence. Yet Gaia has a right to prohibit at any time, using any means, any one species from over-running the biosphere and habitats shared by all.

Sadly the industrial, speculative and unsustainable capitalistic economy benefiting some humans is killing Earth. This growth machine in population, economy and inequitable consumption has established as the norm an immoral, short-sighted way of life based upon eating ecosystems and children (or at least their future) to wantonly consume and grow a bit more. If cumulative impacts of human ecosystem destruction upon Gaia continue; the Earth System dies, taking humanity, all life and creation with her. The current paradigm’s emphasis upon growth at all costs is so pernicious that almost certainly only revolution, fundamental social change and personal transformation can eradicate it.

Earth’s life – from seeds to plants, bees to trees, plant communities to ecosystems, and all life in between – is remarkable. We are witnessing the end product of 3.5 billion years of glorious evolution, now being cleared for toilet paper and fish sticks. Three hundred years ago humans began dismantling these priceless biological and ecological systems that provide their habitat for growth in population, economies and consumption. Somewhere around the time Europeans spilled forth to enslave and conquer the world, this idea was lost. These ideals of ecological colonialism – equating ecosystem destruction, biological diminishment, hierarchical subjugation and growth in virtually everything; with progress – have spread globally, creating a world of over six billion human super-predators. These beasts exist upon the flesh of Earth, and are raping her supine bounty for selfish self-aggrandizement.

Ecological Internet is not the first or only one to note limits to growth and collapsing ecosystems, however we are amongst the first to diagnose people's power Earth Revolution on Gaia’s behalf as the only workable means to achieve ecologically sufficient solutions for global sustainability. Humanity has a long history of expanding rights necessary for a broader sense of well-being to humans, and has fought just revolutions and wars to broaden this sphere of rights. The very same Europeans whose worldview led them to slaughter natives and natural ecosystems developed the Rights of Man, later amended to include most women and races. In just the past few hundred years humans have made great strides in personal liberty, freedom and equality that rank amongst the greatest human achievements ever. Monarchy and systematic slavery have largely been banished from Earth, and this is true human progress in understanding the nature and rights of being.

Sadly human liberties remain incomplete, fragile and are not universalized. Billions continue to live under authoritarian regimes, women are not given equal rights in most places, billions more are unable to exercise personal liberties as gross economic depredation leads to a scramble to survive, and the dominant economic system of hierarchical capitalism continues to bind most to a life of slave wages. Shockingly, two billion live on under $2/day, just under a billion each lack fresh water and food. And a system of elite rule remains firmly entrenched. Yet the idea that all humans are created equal and enjoy liberties and freedom has become established and continues to be perfected. Now what of the rights of Earth that makes human rights possible?

The Rights of Earth and all creatures will surely be the next great expansion of revealed truth and natural law. The non-human world – the air, water, land, oceans and their plants and wildlife – provide the living context for all biological existence including, for now, humans. Together these ecosystems, organisms and their ecological processes and patterns combine to create Gaia – a living, self-regulating organism – who’s right to exist is independent of human notions of value. That is birds, plants, trees, wildlife, wetlands and other ecosystems have intrinsic value; and a right to exist independent of human needs and wants. The disease that permeates the human condition is to continue viewing Gaia as mere resources for consumption, rather than being acknowledged as the ecosystems that make all life and the Rights of Man possible.

This state of enraged human ecocide must end immediately at all costs. Humans are entirely dependent upon Earth for every aspect of our existence. Continued ignorance, greed, fear, or just giving up because we are overwhelmed are not options. Each of us is now called to be the greatest of the great generations and save Earth from ourselves, by granting and enforcing her rights. Earth has the right to continue evolving. It has the right to be free from human geoengineering technology that further destroys creation. Earth has the right to not have its skin – natural terrestrial ecosystems – peeled from its body. Water – the Earth’s blood – has the right to flow freely creating the conditions for life. Earth has a right to bounteous oceans, to be toxic free, to not drown in carbon and nitrogen. Earth has the right to have it's human load lightened, so that it may heal, and to be ecologically restored to its original condition.

Earth has a right to exist independent of any other human concern – including growing the economy and population, providing outrageous consumption for some and little for others, or any obligation to lift the over-populated poor from material poverty by destroying the future. The biosphere has a right, indeed an obligation, to continue functioning regardless of whether this inconveniences the wants of any one species or some of its members. Without Gaia there is no being; no singing, politics, love or making love, dance, sport, economics, living, or anything. Earth’s rights are paramount over every other consideration. As the foundation of known being, Earth is the ultimate truth. Gaia is God.

Earth and her humanity and all creatures are poised upon a precipice of total and complete ecological and social collapse. Earth has the right to mercilessly slaughter any creatures that threaten the integrity of the whole and other parts. Insofar as knowledgeable humans can positively help, Earth’s ecocide must be resisted at all costs using all means, or being ends and there is nothing. Should the human animal – the current rulers of Earth (for now anyway) fail to expand the notion of the Rights of Earth, and stop its pervasive dismembering of Gaia, it will be to their own detriment and eventual demise. As one species amongst many, continued human being and shared survival depends upon taking a hard turn back to Earth, natural ecosystems and Gaia’s defense.

Gaia and all creatures including humans have a right to ecological self-defense. Gaia – and those with global ecological vision acting on her behalf – have the right to eradicate the disease consuming being. Earth has the right to inspire revolution on its behalf. The past movements and revolutions to end monarchy and slavery are examples but not blueprints. Earth and those human defenders whom have evolved to fully appreciate their connection with Gaia have a right to take any and all reasoned, thoughtful actions deemed strategic to protect and restore Gaia – ranging from protests, boycotts, civil disobedience, sit-ins, swarming, sabotage, non-cooperation, insurgency, guerrilla warfare – all stages in an escalating global peoples’ power Earth Revolution until global ecological sustainability is achieved.

The meaning of the rest of enlightened human being is protecting and restoring ecosystems making up our habitat – air, water, land, soils, fish, oceans, toxics - and to make a just, equitable and sustainable world for all Gaia’s creatures. You are encouraged to hurry back to land and dedicate your being, your very life, to Gaia. Provision of Earth’s right to exist means getting back to the land to protect terrestrial, water, ocean and atmospheric ecosystems. Organic gardening, permaculture, population limits, ending coal and old forest logging and much more are keys to Earth and humanity’s survival.

All our shared futures, all life's survival, are being determined now. If Gaia undergoes much more ecosystem loss and diminishment, and her human inhabitants fail to turn the corner to embrace ecological protection and restoration, it almost certainly will be too late. Earth and her defenders have all rights to use escalating revolutionary tactics, to do whatever is necessary to avert an end to being. Indeed all global citizens that understand what is at stake for the planet and all of Gaia’s shared survival have a sacred obligation to slay the growth machine, banish speculative and industrial capitalism, and return to a rewilded, relocalized and a just, free, equitable and ecologically sustainable Earth.

Simply, the environmental movement lifts its game and embraces radical tactics or it's over. What is continued being worth to you? What sacrifices are you willing to make? Are you willing to organize, sacrifice, protest, prepare, sabotage and revolt? Would you die fighting for Earth’s continued being? A people’s power Earth Revolution must be built. Long-standing campaigns, protests and petitions will continue and expand. Some may engage in leaderless resistance Earth revolution, forming autonomous cells with friends, to clandestinely sabotage the growth machine. Continued intransigence by the elite, and a full-scale Earth insurgency may be necessary, and there should be preparations now.

We are at a point in history where any future revolutions would rightly find indiscriminate killing intolerable. There is no need for terrorism, and this is not what is being discussed. Yet there are so very many soft property targets for sabotage within the growth machine. To say "violence is never the answer" as Earth is dying by known perpetrators relegates the biosphere and society to apocalyptic ecological collapse which will assuredly not be non-violent. It is well past time for the global ecological sustainability movement to carefully consider all options and begin escalating its tactics. Or we can just roll over with Gaia and die.

The United States of America is an epic experiment, as despite great accomplishments and numerous imperfections, we share a long history of constantly striving to improve our union. As Americans settle in for Memorial Day to remember veterans of all stripes – from great wars of world defense to more recent military adventurism – it is appropriate to consider what the current Gulf Oil Spill says about the American way of life. Plainly, our addiction to oil and consumption in general threatens to destroy regional and global ecosystems – the water, air, land and oceans –upon which Americans, humanity and all species depend upon for habitat and life.

America is truly exceptional. Yet it is not because of our materially excessive lifestyles, as best demonstrated by our wide girths and ample posteriors. There is more to America than consumption. Our greatness is primarily due to our wavering, imperfect yet unique commitment to freedom and liberty. Over two hundred years ago a just revolution was fought asserting individual liberties from monarchial authoritarianism. The principles of freedom and liberty were a gift to the world. This is what truly has set us apart. And despite two decades of consistent roll-backs in civil and human rights, Americans remain for now free peoples to prosper or expire.

America has and continues to face many challenges – repudiating slavery, enfranchising most, world wars – and most recently the inevitable slowdown of economic growth as speculative, industrial capitalism runs its course. America has enjoyed for awhile super-sized living and grown to be what it is based upon liquidating ecosystems. We have progressed to the point where regional ecosystems are collapsing – most obviously in the Gulf Coast, but throughout the vast country as ecosystems are dying. America now faces our most difficult and profound test ever, coming to terms with our deeply ecologically unsustainable lifestyles, and committing to national and global ecological sustainability.

Clearly the American way of life has been built upon liquidating our own and foreign natural life-giving ecosystems to access resources for consumption. To equate mowing ancient forests, dumping waste into water, over-fishing oceans, polluting the atmosphere, and the pervasive toxic chemical cocktail with progress and development is absurd. It is entirely possible that oil deep undersea and within our shared Earth was not meant to be drilled, much less burnt. America must directly face our profound dependence upon oil and destruction of natural ecosystems as the basis of our economy; or our country will collapse, many if not all will needlessly suffer and prematurely die, and a livable Earth may cease to exist.

The oil spilling endlessly into the Gulf of Mexico – one of America’s most rich ecosystems –shows clearly Americans of all types will commit to ecological sustainability or our free country will cease to exist. Marshes and rivers and forests and fish are far more than resources – they and all natural ecosystems provide for humanity’s habitat and existence upon Earth. The American way of life must be updated by what Ecology – the radical science – teaches us about limits to growth and requirements to sustain the biosphere. And to reflect moral outrage that as we continue to literally stuff ourselves and over-develop to death, two billion people live worldwide on under $2/day, 800 million without access to clean water. Collapsing ecosystems will almost certainly be used as the pretext for some sort of more authoritarian political system.

The American dream and way of life are built upon ecocide – willful murder of the environment. Such ecocidal behavior is problematic not only because we are literally eating Earth to death, but also because Americans use so much more than their fair share of the surplus natural capital, relative to the family of nations, than can be done sustainably. It is deeply troubling – bordering on evil – that 4% of the world’s population consumes 25% of its oil. And now sadly the rest of the world is copying America’s conspicuous over-consumption as a way of life. In an over-populated Earth plagued by inequitable consumption, clearly there has to be more meaning to life than having more stuff, including first meeting all humanity’s basic needs.

The resources necessary for all the gadgets, cars, energy and consumption found in the American dream are largely being taken at the point of gun by the U.S. military, and through neo-colonial dependency arrangements between U.S. business and resource owners. 911 was direct blowback from several decades of such behavior. It is time to stop thinking in terms of tribal nationalism and embrace the human family; as ecological challenges including forest loss, water scarcity, ocean decline, air pollution, soil depletion, nitrogen saturation and biodiversity loss threaten to destroy all nations’ peoples. How many more U.S. soldiers must kill and die needlessly in foreign lands to support these inequities and unsustainability?

Let us buttress America’s commitment to true freedom and liberty with equal devotion to equity, justice and global ecological sustainability. Future American and global ecological sustainability looks less urban, more organic; simple but quality lives; less government, more community, and dedication to protecting and restoring ecosystems. It is possible and crucial for all our shared survival to live simply, laugh often, and love deeply as we lead deeply fulfilling lives within the context of a healthy and vibrant environment, and a steady state economy which can last forever.

It is well past time to show American resolve and commitment and get the damn oil leak capped. This is an unprecedented ecological emergency that portends the future. There should be millions of Americans streaming to partake in skimming oil and cleaning what comes ashore. This is our task, our job, our life, our future, our country, our Earth and our ecology at stake. Further, I would like to take this opportunity to call for criminal investigations of BP and the U.S. government’s oil departments, for the immediate resignation of Ken Salazar as Secretary of Interior, and for a permanent global ban to ecocidal offshore oil drilling.

Ecological Internet recently declared a planetary ecological emergency[1] based upon overwhelming new ecological science indicating Earth is at or near the tipping point, and key global ecosystems and life-support systems are failing. All true Americans and global citizens are urged to dramatically reduce their personal consumption and to commit to massively reducing their personal use of oil. And the U.S. government must cease to be an oil oligarchy, divorce itself from this Earth destroying industry, and stop waging war to feed its oil addiction. Failure on either account may justly lead to the next great American Revolution: a people’s power Earth Revolution on behalf of Earth, all her life, and the human family.

Ecological Internet (EI) today declares a planetary ecological emergency [search]. On the basis of overwhelming new ecological science indicating Earth is past the tipping point and key global ecosystems and life-support systems are failing – EI calls for an immediate and escalating people’s power Earth Revolution on behalf of Earth, all her life, and the human family. A recent highly significant scientific paper entitled “Planetary Boundaries: A Safe Operating Space for Humanity“[1] highlights the numerous means by which the Earth System’s life-support systems are failing. The natural right of all species to take all necessary actions to protect themselves, their habitat and do what is necessary to avoid ecocide is thus activated. This is not a drill.

The human family faces the imminent collapse of the biosphere – the thin layer of life organized into ecosystems, upon an otherwise lifeless planet – that makes Earth habitable. Marshes and rivers and forests and fish are far more than resources – they and all natural ecosystems provide for humanity’s habitat and existence upon Earth. A few centuries of unprecedented explosion in human numbers and surging inequitable consumption are needlessly destroying being for all living things. Environmental movement accommodation and compromise have not brought required policies necessary to avert widespread ecosystem collapse, or to lay the basis for achieving global ecological sustainability.

Ecological Internet believes biocentric, deep ecologists must carefully, quickly and thoroughly consider possibly using widespread leaderless resistance, sabotage and carefully targeted insurgency on behalf of our ecosystem habitats and shared survival. Revolutionary actions such as ending coal use, reforming industrial agriculture, and protecting and restoring old forests and other natural ecosystems, are a requirement for living within the biosphere and life-support systems’ carrying capacities. This declaration establishes “New Earth Rising” [2] as a political wing of an Earth Revolution to freely discuss and debate, though not directly incite or partake, in these matters.

Earth and humanity’s survival depend upon getting these items implemented quickly using protest, civil disobedience, and if rebuffed yet again; considering carefully targeted sabotage and insurgency of the growth machine which is eating our ecosystem habitats.

Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet’s President, explains “I don't want to be doing any of this myself, and I am most assuredly not trying to incite any imminent illegal activities. As an academic ‘Political Ecologist’ I study and write about revolutionary strategies to achieve global ecological sustainability. We seek to discuss what revolutionary tactics could possibly be used to sustain Earth's biosphere and constituent ecosystems required to maintain habitability. This is free speech, and given the importance of the topic of Earth System global change, surely is appropriate.”

[1] In “Planetary Boundaries: A Safe Operating Space for Humanity,” published this past fall in the journal Ecology and Society, and presented also in Scientific American magazine’s April issue, twenty-eight luminaries from environmental and earth-systems science identified nine "planetary life-support systems" that are vital for human survival. It was found humanity had already overstepped three of nine planetary boundaries –biodiversity loss, climate change and nitrogen cycle – and is approaching boundaries for the use of fresh water and land, and ocean acidification.

Shared survival requires powering down, going back to the land, and ecological resistance.

The human family faces imminent and (Copenhagen would suggest) inevitable collapse of the biosphere – the thin layer of life upon an otherwise lifeless planet – that makes Earth habitable. Marshes and rivers and forests and fish are far more than resources – they and all natural ecosystems are a necessity for humanity’s existence upon Earth. A few centuries of historically unprecedented explosion in human numbers and surging, albeit inequitable, consumption and resultant resource use, ecosystem destruction and pollution; is needlessly destroying being for all living things. Revolutionary action such as ending coal use, reforming industrial agriculture and protecting and restoring old forests and other natural ecosystems, is a requirement for the continuation of shared human being.

Earth is threatened by far more than a changing atmosphere causing climate change. Cumulative ecosystem destruction – not only in climate, but also water, forests, oceans, farmland, soils and toxics -- in the name of “progress” and “development” -- threatens each of us, our families and communities, as well as the Earth System in total and all her creatures. Any chance of achieving global ecological sustainability depends urgently upon shifting concerns regarding climate change to more sufficiently transform ourselves and society to more broadly resist global ecological change. Global ecological, social and economic collapse may be inevitable, but its severity, duration and likelihood of recovery are being determined by us now. It does not look good as the environmental movement has been lacking in its overall vision, ambition and implementation.

The growing numbers of ecologically literate global citizens must come forward to together start considering ecologically sufficient emergency measures to protect and restore global ecosystems. We need a plan that allows humans and as many other species as possible to survive the coming great ecological collapse, even as we work to soften the collapse, and to restore to the extent practicable the Earth’s ecosystems. This mandates full protection for all remaining large natural ecosystems and working to reconnect and enlarge biologically rich smaller remnants that still exist. It is time for a hard radical turn back to a fully functioning and restored natural Earth which will require again regaining our bond with land (and air, water and oceans), powering down our energy profligacy, and taking whatever measures are necessary to once again bring society into balance with ecosystems.

This may mean taking all measures necessary to stop those known to be destroying ecosystems for profit. As governments dither and the elite profit, it has become dreadfully apparent that the political, economic and social structures necessary to stop human ecocide of our and all life’s habitats does not yet exist. The three hundred year old hyper-capitalistic and nationalistic growth machine eating ecosystems is not going to willingly stop growing. But unless it does, human and most or all other life will suffer a slow and excruciating apocalyptic death. Actions can be taken now to soften ecological collapse while maximizing the likelihood that a humane and ecologically whole Earth remains to be renewed.

Geoengineering Won’t Work

The only “Plan B” offered by the ruling elite is to actively consider geoengineering global ecological processes and countless other techno-fixes. Rather than power down or sacrifice, it appears we as a species are willing to gamble with long odds with our and all lives. As if scouring all sorts of ecosystems of their life, global polluting industrialism, and embrace of consumption as the meaning of life is not enough of a load for global ecosystems. Now it is proposed we further alter oceans and the atmosphere unnaturally at a global scale to engineer a biosphere. Humans cannot control most invasive species, keep oil out of water, or feed everyone; yet now we are fit to run the biosphere? Unintended, inequitable and horrendous consequences are assured.

Gaia – the Earth System – is far too complex to engineer and trying will seal the demise of our shared, finely honed, and naturally evolved biosphere. Geoengineering and the blind faith in technology it represents can only lead to further degradation of ecosystems and biosphere, over population and consumption, while virtually annihilating any chance of maintaining a natural and habitable Earth. It would be far better to embrace ecological restoration and other necessary policy measures including ending coal, industrial agricultural and old forest logging. A biosphere can never be engineered, but it may be planted, tended and assisted to restore itself. First you take the pressure off ecosystems, and then allow and assist them to naturally recover. Global ecological protection and restoration is the only sort of human ecosystem manipulation that can save us now.

Given the momentum of seven billion super-predators consuming ecosystems to meet their every (and endless) whims, it is not possible to stop social, economic and ecological collapse. But there is a still chance of a worthy human society post economic and ecological collapse if we return to the land, power down and resist. It is all about having as much intact ecosystems as possible to lighten the blow and reconstitute society and ecosystems post-collapse. Here, and in my forth-coming book “New Earth Rising”, as a political ecologist I offer a very different plan to the blind faith in technological progress that removes us more from natural life-giving ecosystem processes and patterns. Perhaps this can be called Plan “ER” for Earth Restoration.

Powering Down

It is a global ecological imperative that we begin dismantling the industrial growth machine to return to honest, well-lived and simple lifestyles – protecting, tending and restoring natural agro-ecosystems. Though terribly difficult given the choices society presents us, each of us must begin the process of getting off the grid, dramatically cutting our energy use and refusing to consume energy from burning fossil fuels. There will come a time where dismantling roads, industries and cities will be appropriate. We must insist that society’s resources are used towards these ends. But make no mistake, no amount of “renewable energy” can allow current, much less predicted, excessive energy usage for everything from our food to our transport to our housing to continue.

The “slowing” economy in the over-developed world is the logical conclusion of disease like growth in human populations, resource use and consumption. Highly satisfying for some for awhile, but such ecocidal resource binging cannot and will not last. And now the entire world, including the 2 billion that live on under $2 a day, understandably and justly want better lives. Sadly though, through the power of corporate media, most poor style the ideal life upon the excesses of the West. This means they undervalue their own more ecologically sustainable and personally satisfying lifestyles and livelihoods driven by community and sharing. Life is clearly more than what you own and consume, it is what you do and who you are that counts. And it is never too late to make positive changes.

Both personally and societally we must wean ourselves from gluttonous energy use and conspicuous over-consumption, and demand political and social structures that compel others do so as well. As individuals we are faced with much outside of our control, so it won’t all happen at once, but each of us must begin disengaging ourselves from the dominant growth paradigm, and begin to achieve some measure of self-sufficiency. Start by becoming as independent from slave wage labor and marketing neuroses as fast as financially feasible. Those that voluntarily begin to power down will be at an enormous advantage as the ecological shit hits the fan. And there is no better place to start than loving and being one with a piece of land. The land, think always of the land.

Back to the Land

The age of Ecological Restoration will be predicated upon a return to the land to practice local agrarian democracy. There is no chance of survival post economic, social and ecological collapse if you do not have a homestead – a piece of land, with water, good soils, tools, seeds and other implements of self-sufficiency. Cities are artificial constructs that consume resources from far and wide, and whose resource use and pollution can never be sustained. When collapse hits, billions will die there in a very short time, as the modern and ecologically illiterate learn food and water does not come from grocery stores and taps. Living the good life – or for that matter any life at all – will soon not be possible unless you have prepared your land and are willing and able to defend it. This does not necessarily suggest survivalist paranoia, as when the rains stop and Earth grows parched, it is highly likely mobility will cease and we will be left to live where we are.

Prepare to live upon land within the limits of your bioregion. There are many opportunities to pursue alternative sharing communities. Large numbers of well-networked people locally, and on the Internet for as long as it lasts, going back to the land to live in an ecologically sustainable manner is the second component of a radical turn away from inappropriate technology and economic growth; to a restoration economy, living more fulfilling lives with the land and reintegrating humans with nature. Even the richest countries still possess relatively inexpensive land with remnant ecosystems that can be assisted to enlarge. Not-yet-over-developed countries still hold much potential for self-support. We must all relearn to plant and tend our forest gardens, organic permaculture and native ecosystems starting now and for eternity.

As with any animal, we cannot long persist without intact habitat. Human well-being all comes back to the state of the land and its soil and biota. When we protect and restore land – water, oceans and atmosphere are much improved as well. It has long been known that full and sensible lives are possible from living within a local bioregion’s bounty. The explosive growth in everything is a new phenomenon and cannot and will not be sustained under any conditions. It is not necessary to work so hard to acquire stuff. Much satisfaction comes from being one with land, having a loving family and community, and enjoying the arts, sports, literature and other aspects of culture we love. Ecological collapse will still be wrenching, but on the land you and a civilized way of life have a fighting chance. Live simply, laugh often and love deeply.

Ecological Resistance

The next stage towards ecological enlightenment and serving Gaia is passive refusal to participate in the system, escalating through various stages of resistance until known ecocidal activities are ended – and ecosystems protected and widely restored – as soon as possible. No one including this political ecologist is suggesting that imminently we should start waging violent revolution against the speculative industrial growth machine that is killing us all. At this time we would lose an outright fight. But clearly it is time to have a conversation regarding what other types of protest activities besides petitions and protests are valid in a dying world, even within supposed democracies.

What the Earth System needs badly right now is a million acts of resistance to obstruct and eventually destroy the ecologically unsustainable economic growth machine. There is an immediate need to vigorously obstruct the growth machine through active non-participation in the speculative industrial system. At some point others may wish to consider destruction of Earth destroying equipment through carefully targeted acts of sabotage. And if this fails, we may come to realize a need to pursue more revolutionary acts, such as insurgency and guerrilla warfare. From time to time through human history it has been necessary to wage war to promote greater justice, equity and freedom – and now perhaps ecological sustainability as well.

Those that are so enamored with Gandhi and King that they cannot even broach the subject of possible revolutionary tactics are naïve and misunderstand history. There are times when society has decades to change, and can do so entirely peacefully using patient tactics, and there are others where the elite rule and their own violence to Earth and the poor is so pervasive, that only rapidly escalating acts of resistance offer any hope. There has never been such justification – the destruction of the Earth as a whole and all its attendant parts – to at least consider various revolutionary acts to bring about a personal and social revolution in humanity’s relationship to Gaia. Collapse is inevitable and large numbers are going to die, the question in regard to our current actions is whether Earth, humanity and our sister species will persist and resurge or not.

Those on their moral high horses that refuse to even discuss destroying known perpetrators of ecocide, and ostracizing those that do, are dooming the Earth to an apocalyptic death. I state this fully realizing how devastating wars are. Yet much of the world lives in abject want and indelible violence of the existing industrial capitalistic system already, and the rest will soon join them as ecosystems and their economies collapse. We can stop the violence being done to Earth, humanity and all creatures in the name of “progress”; or we can wait passively for the coming anarchy. Our ability to withstand and recover from collapse depends intimately upon ending the destruction and beginning an era of Revolutionary Ecological Restoration.

Time is short and ecosystems failing. Almost certainly Earth is more resilient than generally supposed. But ecological limits exist and global ecosystems have never encountered such massive disturbance so quickly from one species. While I feel compelled to present this biocentric vision, it is one that does not come easily for me either. This thought of a less consumptive and more local living scares me too. I like technology and the comforts it provides. On several occasions, including after a nervous breakdown several years ago, I wanted nothing to do with this lifestyle. But now I realize it is the only humane and just way that allows humanity to survive and, perhaps along with all Earth’s life, prosper again.

Earth is dying. You can sit back and enjoy creature comforts for awhile more, participating in the slaying of Gaia, and then witness and feel personally the disintegration of being, or you can start crafting the land stewardship, resource renewal and political systems that will allow humanity to minimize the disruption and persist well post collapse. And the resulting death and mayhem will certainly be lessened if you and your friends decide to take a hard turn back to nature starting now – and choose to power down, go back to the land, and actively resist.

Continue Taking Action Online at: http://bit.ly/png_tuna

(MADANG, PAPUA NEW GUINEA) -- Over 500 people gathered at the Madang Provincial Government Headquarters on Thursday, October 15th, to protest Papua New Guinea governments' support for the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone (PMIZ). The PMIZ, at Vidar along the North Coast Road, is expected to be one of the biggest tuna developments in the Asia-Pacific region. Local peoples rallied to express strong opposition to PMIZ and presented a petition to the Government calling on them to halt the project. Online, thousands of global protesters from around the world supported local peoples' demands [1].

Men, women and children sat in front of the Madang provincial government building with placards that read 'No more PMIZ', 'We want our land back – think about our future', while others proclaimed 'We do not want PMIZ – it will destroy our sea [2]'. The crowd was peaceful but frustrated. They also informed the government that a formal complaint has begun with the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC), and that legal actions are imminent against all parties involved.

The planned US$300 million (K990m) PMIZ project will greatly increase industrial harvest of Madang, PNG and the Pacific Islands' rich tuna resources. Canneries and dock and storage facilities are to be constructed to service foreign fishing vessels that would dump their tuna catch. It will bring tens of thousands of unskilled Asians into Papua New Guinea when local unemployment is high. And it most certainly will lead to fishery depletion and collapse. Unless PMIZ is resisted, overfishing and piracy will destroy PNG and much of the world's remaining tuna fisheries.

PMIZ would build 10 tuna factories and processing facilities like the current Filipino RD Tuna cannery. The existing plant has previously been shut down for birds defecating into tuna cans, fined for poor waste disposal, and employee relations are poor. Benefits have been limited to assembly line jobs for women who make K80 a fortnight (~ $USD26). Villagers have been affected by the "sex for tuna trade" where local women trade sex for fish by-catches.

The PMIZ project is being strongly driven from Port Moresby, the ruling National Alliance and their Chinese partners. The PNG national government, which is rushing the project through despite local opposition, tried to revoke permission for this democratic assembly and expression of concerns. The march had been approved by the provincial police authorities, but a government minister complained to Police Headquarters, who overturned the decision and banned the march. Still, people bravely marched.

This led Opposition leader Sir Mekere Morauta to ask "In whose interests is the country being governed? A foreign power? Foreign business interests? Illegal immigrants? Certainly not for Papua New Guineans. Section 46 of our Constitution expressly provides for freedom of expression; Section 47 provides for the right to freedom of assembly and association; Section 57 provides for enforcement of these guaranteed rights and freedoms… This is yet another example of the trend of this Government of turning PNG into a Mugabe-type regime."

Local people are increasingly expressing a sense of distance from the government, and are becoming angry. It is widely thought that PMIZ is for the overseas companies, the Chinese, the corrupt politicians and those few locals they have bought off. Said one young person, "the government doesn't give a ****. They just want the money for themselves. They are not thinking of us or our future or what damage this project will do to the people of Madang. Hell they don't even think we have a brain . What do they think we're going to do - just listen to their **** and accept it? They better not make that mistake."

Plans are to follow the same foreign investment driven development model, to quickly industrially over-develop the tuna resource, which has exhausted fisheries globally wherever practiced. It is not clear how PMIZ can benefit local peoples, as they will be left with no options but to work for the cannery under whatever conditions it chooses. Following the legally questionable ground breaking ceremony in June of 2009, the Madang Lagoon communities have begun holding meetings to explore collective organized actions to permanently block PMIZ.

Local communities are concerned about environment, pollution and land issues. More ecologically sustainable management -- such as a locally owned and controlled mid-size purse-seine fish industry -- could provide fish and income in perpetuity for the people of Madang. A deeply corrupt political system is selling out the land rights, resources and future ecological sustainability of its peoples for a small group to enjoy short-term profit and bribery. This industrial export model enjoys tax holidays, enriches primarily the Chinese-owned trade stores with the small amounts of wage money entering the economy, pollutes local seas, disturbs coastal fisheries and threatens Madang's tourism industry.

Over 75% of the world's ocean fisheries -- some 19 out of 24 -- are being, or have already been, overexploited. Billions of people depend upon wild caught fish protein, and Pacific and PNG fisheries are some of the last healthy wild fish stocks on the planet. Many Asian and European industries and consumers are in need of Pacific fish now, as their own fisheries are collapsing. The EU is RD Tuna's biggest market, with Germany and Ireland the primary export markets.

In the peaceful South Pacific town of Madang, Papua New Guinea (PNG), the local indigenous people are being inundated with foreign industrial "development" projects -- mines, logging and fisheries -- for which they have not been properly consulted, have not given their informed consent, and from which they are unlikely to meaningfully benefit. This includes the PNG government's and World Bank/IFC's plans with China and Japan's governments to facilitate and invest in the construction of ten new tuna fish canneries and a large central warehouse and worker settlement along Madang's beautiful coconut lined north coast. A tranquil village culture -- living simply but well from small-scale fishing -- will be decimated.

A disease is ravaging Earth as ever more people, consume ever more, destroying natural ecosystems that are our shared habitat. In a few short centuries the violent, expansionist and deeply ecologically unsustainable Western mindset has become virtually universally accepted. The meaning of life is more, ever more of everything, at the expense of a finite biosphere. The emptiness of such a vacuous worldview is revealed through changing climate, devastating human inequities and an irredeemably corrupt economic system.

More than just a climate crisis, humanity is facing profound over-population and injustice that are spurring dozens of inter-related ecological and social crises. Billions suffer as their basic human needs go unmet, while billions more gorge themselves. Forests, prairies, streams, rivers, estuaries, wetlands, lakes, soil, oceans, air and all the rest are all life's flesh and blood. Humanity, Earth and kindred species have entered the late stage condition of ecological overshoot -- whereby our cumulative demands upon ecosystems exceed their life-giving capacity and cause them to collapse.

We are eating creation. Hardly anyone is thinking or acting at the necessary scale to avert global ecological Armageddon. Market based solutions are pervasive with corruption and inequity. Nothing we do is going to maintain an affluent life, as it is now for some. Widespread economic decline will certainly accompany abrupt climate change and global ecosystem collapse; indeed, it has begun. If existing political systems are unable to deal with the inevitable collapse of the growth machine, at the same time as pursuing rigorous environmental policy-making, then new political structures will be necessary.

A stewardship revolution that maintains life of some worthy, habitable sort is possible. Surely in a free country whose liberty came from such means, we can talk about revolutionary violence, as Thomas Jefferson said would continue to be necessary. "The blood of tyrants and patriots must flow to renew the soil." What could be more glorious than fighting, and perhaps dying, for the Earth, and maybe even succeeding in saving her (and us)?

It is time for a credible revolutionary threat to protect the biosphere. What is needed is a steady ratcheting up of pressure – protests, sit-ins, sabotage, assassinations -- giving opponents every opportunity to respond to reasoned arguments – and culminating in guerrilla warfare and whatever else is necessary to save the Earth. If a few thousand insurrectionists can tie up the American military in Iraq, think what dedicated, highly decentralized and autonomous groups of tens of thousands of Earth insurgents could do to bring down industrial capitalism and the Earth eating growth machine.

People power protest culminating in an Earth Revolution needs to be done urgently yet thoughtfully. Not speaking of mob rule or rioting -- that is what is coming from the status quo. We are speaking of highly disciplined, targeted protests including the possible use of violence to bring down the equipment and individuals responsible for destroying global ecosystems, and herald in a new ecologically sustainable, just and equitable way of living with the land, water and sky. Living must become a matter of what you can give to ecosystems, and others with whom you share being, rather than only being concerned with what you can take.

Economic growth cannot continue forever if greenhouse gases are to be curbed, and the myriad of other eco-crises solved. Efforts to cap and trade, certify, sustainably manage and otherwise reform our way out of the situation are orders of magnitude inadequate and failing. Free markets appear to inherently be unable to price carbon and other externalities. It is becoming increasingly unlikely (if not impossible) that current political and business growth systems can reform in time to maintain the ecosystems necessary for life.

The looming death of Gaia and most or all being is no one's fault, or rather, it is all our faults. As many species have done previously, we have collectively overgrazed our habitat. We simply must immediately allow traditional ecological disturbance, regeneration and succession patterns to again operate. The industrial growth machine must be powered off and we must herald in an era of ecological stewardship and restoration. Even while we organize and pursue revolutionary action; each of us must plant, tend and restore our Earth's natural ecosystems and permaculture gardens, and help others to do so.

Only dramatic and immediate revolutionary action to destroy the growth machine offers any hope of maintaining a livable Earth. We must commit to stopping burning and cutting -- antiquated means to make a living -- indeed killing those that refuse to stop. Rich people are setting themselves up to be fine in geo-engineered comfort while sacrificing the poor who no longer have free ecosystem services to sustain them. There can be no engineering of a biosphere; indeed, thinking we can has brought us to this moment. We must return to nature.

We must hold onto our humanity as we collapse and renew ourselves. Earth Revolution is as much about helping those that want to reconnect to Earth as it is sabotaging equipment and killing people directly responsible for ecocide. This means sharing food and water, shelter and clothing. But bring those responsible for ecocide to justice, utterly destroying them, their institutions and their equipment. There must be no indiscriminate terror, but if our warnings go unheeded, targeted violence against known ecological criminals is justified and warranted.

Given the momentum of nearly seven billion seeking to be super-consumers, do not see any other way to stop the forces of destruction other than a revolution. There is absolutely no way current energy and other resource use-- much less expected growth in population and per capita consumption -- can be produced either from agrofuels or more drilling. Humans have hit the biogeochemical limits of a finite planet, and each of us must seek what is enough, rather than always more.

It is well past time to be men and women of fortitude, set aside our computers and amusements, and commit our minds and bodies to stopping the destruction of being. We must demand more courage and less corruption from ourselves and our leaders. The Arctic has already been changed forever. Soon your neighborhood, ecosystem and bioregion will be too (if you really look, almost certainly it is already). Please, as I do, take the end of human being through needless habitat destruction personally.

Part of the solution is allowing people to get back to Earth on their own plot of land. How we live in the future will be by necessity less urban. We will be called upon to make do with what is in our bioregion. Let me make some further suggestions to you. Acquire land and seeds. Make or restore an Earth friendly shelter and plant trees and permaculture forest gardens. Prepare to live in your changing bioregion. Go back to the land. Ecologically farm and restore as you connect with like minded Earth revolutionaries to clandestinely carry out escalating protest, sabotage and guerrilla war.

I urge you to really think about what is necessary -- both personally and in terms of social change -- to sustain being, and committing to it. Token managerial reforms of the antiquated ecologically damaging activities of burning and cutting are not enough. Technology is not going to save us. Market campaigns using glamorous celebrities are not enough. Petitioning our leaders is not going to save us. Personal efforts will only get you and Gaia so far. Only escalating protest action targeting the destroyers, their equipment and their Earth eating worldview can still avert biosphere disintegration.

Set aside your best efforts at ecological denial, acknowledge the task before us, and join with others in becoming a reluctant revolutionary. An Earth insurgency could topple the growth machine in a day, though it may take years. The sooner the better, as more ecological remnants will exist to serve as the basis of ecological restoration. Even as we pursue revolutionary strategies and tactics to maintain a habitable Earth, commit to remaining free and humane. The answer is neither tyranny of the left nor right. Above all else we must achieve global ecological sustainability through just and equitable means.

Protect and restore natural ecosystems including old forests right now. Work with others to destroy coal, tar sands, fishing trawlers, oil palm, industrial agriculture, pipelines and ancient forest loggers. Start today. Now continued human existence depends upon your courage, ecological wisdom and taking direct lethal action in defense of our shared ecological heritage. Each of us and together will transition to a state of ecological grace, quickly, and through action against the Earth destroyers, or we will all die a horrific and barbaric death together as being ends.

If we choose to fight for Earth there is hope, otherwise there is none. Share the anguish of not knowing if revolutionary violence is the answer or not. But it has to be considered comprehensively, thoroughly and quickly. Prove me wrong and demonstrate how to ecologically sufficiently address converging eco-crises in a couple years time within current economic and political systems. Revolution is almost certainly the only possible way to sustain and restore healthy ecosystems as the basis of human civilization and all life. Be strong, slay the growth machine, for Gaia.

This is an excerpt from Dr. Glen Barry's forthcoming new book entitled "New Earth Rising". Sadly, this will not be finished by Copenhagen, though we intend to publish the introduction soon as we begin serializing it at http://www.newearthrising.org/. We eagerly seek a publisher and financial backers to finish the book which is nearing completion.
